Driving without thermostat

Issue: My Accord had jerky acceleration, fumes pour out of the hood, temperature was at H.

Quick roadside solution: The culprit was the thermostat valve. I removed it completely, topped up the radiator with distilled water.

Question: I drive only in temperatures above 70 F all through the year. Shall I bother putting in a new thermostat? The engine is reaching operating temperatures almost as quickly and I don't see a drop in fuel efficiency.

It was designed to have one, like all cars, so I would say yes.

Especially for such a cheap part.

The thermostat is a restriction device. If you remove it, the coolant will flow too rapidly for the radiator to do its job properly. Which, the radiators job is to allow cool air to come in from the front of the car and help transfer the heat in the coolant that it gets from the engine. That's why your car will reach operating temperature rather quickly, but it may also cause your engine to overheat. It's a good idea to replace the thermostat, it's only cheap.

Well its up to you really but you will be fine without one. Had to take out a thermostat on friends car over the summer because of overheating issue. It ran fine after that but obviously you get no heat and so I eventually replaced it for him just a few weeks ago since he had no heat in the car for the winter.

Also have a car that had its thermostat taken away since it was new and no issues with it. This car doesn't see winter.

Thanks for the replies all!

Maybe I'll replace it one of these days..

I just did a 4 D&R + Lubegard Red, $1000 trans job a couple of years back, $350 front suspension parts a year back....so I don't really want to spend more if I can avoid it.

My sentiments exactly. Thermostats are cheap as hell.
