16.29 MPG Accord 2007
I recently bought a second hand Honda Accord 2007 (139000 KM ODO). I have changed the engine, transmission oils and done the fuel injector cleaning.
The fuel consumption I calculated for my car is around 16.29 MPG during city driving. Is it normal or do I need to do some checking? Thanks |

Mine averages 21-23 mpg mixed driving. I've seen 30 on a roadtrip, but never below 20mpg at any point. Sounds like some investigating is required.

For both the i4 and V6 engines, that is extremely low (abnormal). My combined city/hwy in my 3.0L V6 is 23-25mpg and I get closer to 29-32mpg when on long highway road trips
This pic was taken 2 days ago - it is a combined city/hwy of 112 miles, I'd say 65% hwy, 35% city - avg 26.9mpg - after yesterday of driving to work (95% hwy) it rose to 29.9mpg

how does the engine run? Rough? Smooth? May need new plugs, air filter, pcv valve?

The OP is mixing KM and Miles in his post. Are you converting your KM to Miles when you say 16 MPG? If you run the AC and are heavy on the gas pedal all the time, you can get below 20 MPG, especially in hot summer weather.

Oil leakage, cold weather and/or bad gas can lower your MPG. Also larger wheels/tires.
As silverk24 suggested, bad spark plugs or a leaking/non-functioning PCV valve can also affect your MPG.

I have changed the air filter but not the plugs. I will change them this weekend. The weather is little bit colder here in saudi arabia and I may be hard on pedal. Engine runs smoothly but i do feel some vibrations when i am in D gear and waiting on red light and ac is on.

That, and OP it getting "around 16.29 MPG during city driving." What does OP mean by "city driving," streets only?
How are you calculating MPG? What is your driving style like? Could be the hot Saudi temps. |

Please inform us, as namesgoeshere suggested, how exactly you are calculating your MPG. One small error in your math can greatly affect the outcome. 1 MPH = 1.609344 KMH 1 US GAL = 3.7854118 LITERS Personally, I wouldn't just go throwing money into the car, having hopes that it will fix your problem. Remove all of your spark plugs and assess their condition. They may be perfectly healthy and not need replacing yet.

I put in exact 22.22 liters of fuel in my car. This is worth 10 Saudi Riyals here in KSA. I made the trip A setting to zero at the same time. Now after 154 KM my fuel gauge is exactly at the same level. This gives me 6.93 KM/Liters or 16.29 MPG (US gallons). I am not a hot tempered saudi driver as I am an expat living in KSA for work.

It is not good/very accurate to determine your MPG/KML based upon where the needle-position is on the gauge. Sometimes I can reach the 1/2 tank mark (from Full) after 200 miles, other times it reaches the 1/2 tank mark (from Full) after only, say, 160 miles; but yet my avg MPG in the end is around the same. It's also pretty well known that you get better fuel economy during the first 1/2 of tank than the second.
Did the 22.22L completely fill up/top off your tank? If not, completely fill up your tank and start over; don't forget to reset your Trip computer. Drive until your gas light comes on and then divide the amount of KM you have driven by the amount in Liters it took you to completely fill up your tank again. That will give you a more accurate KM Per Liter ratio - then you can easily convert that to Miles Per Gallon

As DreaminAccord said: 1. Go to a gas station and fill up the tank until the nozzle clicks and automatically stops filling. Do not overfill your tank. 2. Reset your trip A meter to zero. 3. Drive until tank is half way empty or more. 4. Fill up the tank again until the nozzle clicks and automatically stops. If possible, use the same gas station and pump. Do not overfill your tank. 5. Write down how many liters of gas you put in. 6. Write down the mileage on trip A meter. 7. Divide the number of KM traveled by liters of gas put in from step # 4. This is your true KM/L (or MPG) And would you clarify what you mean by "city driving?" |

By City Driving I mean my work location is around 6 KM from my home and I have to stop at at least 3 traffic lights on my way to office and same on return. When I return from my office for at least 02 KM I have to drive very slowly due to high traffic. Similarly I some times go out at night for some shopping etc and all the malls are at the same route to my office so around 25 to 30 KM driving everyday with 06 to 09 traffic light stops.
Thanks all for your advise. I will recalculate the fuel consumption by filling the fuel tank full and come back to the forum within few days. Regards.. |
