Thumbs up How to check tire tread...

I know a lot of you check your tire pressures regularly......
Here is another less than $5 item to check your tread depth !!!
You can tell when to rotate(if less tread on front) and helps track alignment..
When you check depth.. check all the way across tread... inner edge, center and outer edge...
I check my tread depth once a month.....

Any particular brand you recommend? Do you have a preferred location to get this item? Anything particular to look for or look out for when getting one?

Brands = Milton, Camel, Lisle ..

Auto Zone or Advance may have.

Napa,Carquest I know have them, Just check in tire repair section.

I actually have flat plastic ones also that work just fine also but those are supplied by company I contract to..
They are actually promo items that you can put you logo on as give aways...
I use them if I loose or misplace the one in picture....

Great advice, I1!!

I take so much for granted. Although we don't check on a scheduled basis, I would guess that it's about every 6 weeks. That's about our rode trip intervals & he always checks the fluids & gives a general inspection before we go. I don't put as many miles on as the adverage driver inbetween. For a long time my car only needed gas before a rode trip! We'd fill up about 50 miles from home & that's what I'd drive on until the next one! This weekend he actually did have to gas her up though! If we hadn't made that trip into Concord....... there's a new Frys Electronics open there....... DANGER!!

I have to admit I don't do this. I just rotate my tires every 6K and because the Accord stays in alignment so well, I was able to get 81K miles from 2 of my original tires and 97K from the last 2.

Those Michelin MXV4+ aren't the best tires for ride/wet traction, but they sure wear well.

I've since gone cheap with Goodrich HR touring tires from Sam's. Nothing special about these, just cheap and fairly good wet traction.

Here's a picture of it in use.....
8/32" tread left on my Firestones after 19k miles.. They don't hold up as well on the V6 as compaired to my 5th gen I4.
The Original Michelin's had 46k and 5/32" tread left when I replaced.
I will probably go with the Turanza LS-H on next set..
The Firestone Indy 500(S/T rated) handles great rain/snow/dry..
The noise level is more than I like on this car(Weight)...
I put the Turanza LS-T's on my van and I'm very happy with handling and(no)noise...at least on that vehicle!!!

Turanza LS-H is what I went with when the first 2 originals were done. I planned on adding 2 more, but one was ruined when my wife picked up a large drill bit and Firestone deemed it unrepairable. I decided to go cheap instead, it's too bad Sam's doesn't carry that brand. You get mounting, valve stems, lifetime balancing, rotation and ROAD HAZARD for the $9/tire.

They were great tires for the 25K I had them on. Much better wet traction, very low noise and good handling. I still have one in the garage, hopefully I'll run across another slightly used and then they'll find there way back on one of the cars down the road.

Did you know the same can be accomplished using a nickle?

Insert the nickle into the tread groove upside down, in other words the top of George's head is inserted into the tread.

If you can see 100% of George's head it's time to replace the tire.

Inflation is killing us. My father taught me to use a penny, now we have to use nickles. Is this because no one saves pennies anymore, or is it for some other reason?

I don't even know when/where he got it! It may have been one of those visiting rep things....

I just couldn't resist showing it though.

I also have a little Honda flashlight.... he knows I like this stuff so he brings them home to me.
