DTC P1456 - EVAP Emissions Control

What damage to the vehicle will result if the cause of this code (P1456 - EVAP Emissions Control System Leakage - Fuel Tank System) is not taken care of?

Is this something I need to have diagnosed and fixed immediately?

Thanks!

Excess fuel consumption, excess emission, and spark plug fouling to name a few... EVAP systems are a PITA to diagnose if it's not something obvious like a loose sealing gas cap.

I'd start with cleaning the filler neck area of rust and cleaning the rubber seal around the gas cap first to see if the problem goes away.

BTW, what car is it?

You could have simply not tightened the gas cap when filling up your car.

I would have the code cleared by Autozone. On my 95 you can remove the radio/ECU backup fuse for about 30 seconds to reset the ECU. I'm not sure about your Accord. Make sure that gas cap is tight and do not overfill your tank. If the error code comes back after resetting your ECU, then you have a problem.

Cleaning the threads at the tank and checking the rubber gasket is also an easy and can be a cheap fix to your problem.
