I found the TSB by accident in a google search a few years ago when I was searching for another issue. The next week after I found the TSB, the display on my stereo/AC burned out. I have a 2003 Accord EX V6. I printed out the TSB and took it to my Honda Dealer in Valencia CA, and they replaced the stereo free of charge, without any issues.

Apparently the resister that powers the backlighting overheats and eventually fails. This is why they determined it was a defect and not wear-and-tear.

It did not affect the Navigation models since they have a completely different display and design.

Ssssooo, the problem was limited to the 2003 and 2004 models? Interesting thing is that my 2003 V6 had the problem. My 2004, 4 Cylinder, completely built in Japan with over 100k did not.

I checked the Service Bulletin and my 04's VIN is a higher number than what's covered...why would that be? Was the problem fixed in later '04s?

Does having this fix done change code to the stereo? I ask because I had this happen to my 2003 accord in 2004 and I think the dealer put an entirely new system in it but I cannot remember. I do know that whatever I have now has a different security code than what was in there before.

They should've given you the new radio code, they gave me the new radio code when they replaced my unit (under warranty) last year.

Another question, since they replaced my radio, did they fix the issue for good?

I have the new radio code. I am trying to determine what the dealer did when I had this problem the first time around. I think they just replaced the stereo and a/c unit altogether because it was done in 2004, which was probably before this issue was known about. I now have the same problem again.

Yes, it is the same issue. The climate control LED's still work, but the button and LCD illumination are affected by the blown resistor. Take your vehicle to the dealer and they should replace the headunit for free, even out of warranty.

Mine was fixed, but I had to pay the labor, which I was glad to do........

The OTHER big problem with 2003 Accords was the brakes. They were crap from the factory, and since it is a wear item, Honda was not good about covering any problems after a year. I just had the rotors cut and new pads put on, and decided I had bigger fish to fry........

i took it to the dealer shortly after, my buddy that works in the service department talked to his manager n told me he couldn't do nothing for me since i had 116,000 on my 03 accord, the warranty only covers up to 105,000miles

Call Honda of America and report the dealer's refusal. Or take the TSB to the dealer and tell the manager he is wrong. Better yet, go to another dealer if they refuse to replace the stereo. Honda is replacing them under their goodwill policy, even out of warranty. It is a known defect, not wear and tear. Honda replaced mine out of warranty, no charge period, not even for labor. My dealer took care of it, and I didn't have to do anything.
