08 Accord V6 6MT coupe w/155K miles for $4000 wise choice? Any j35z3 engine problems?

I've been considering a honda accord for a while, and just happened across a 2008 honda accord V6 coupe with the 6-speed manual. It has 155,000 miles on it, but it is only $4000. The interior is in pristine condition, it has a new set of tires and rims, an aftermarket muffler, and a (cheap :/) aftermarket intake. Would this be a wise choice to make? I'm 18 years old and looking to get a reliable car. I don't mind spending something like $1000 or so later to make sure it's in running condition, but these cars are pretty bulletproof, right? I will, of course, do a carfax and inspection at a mechanic before buying it, but does this seem like a wise choice? I'd really appreciate your input!

Most people on this forum would tell you that 155K miles is nothing for an accord. I would agree that I have seen some 2000 Accords with over 200K selling for $3000.

However, the 2008 model is first model year of that generation. It was also known as an oil-burner due to faulty piston rings. My father and I both owned 2008/2009 I4 models and those were both oil burners. Worse than the V6, but the V6 is not exempt from this issue.

So unless you can get a solid answer from the previous owner about the oil issue. You probably won't know if its an oil burner until you drove it for a few thousand miles.
For $4000 its probably not that bad, I would consider it a beater car and not put too much money into it.

Bulletproof? No.

Have the front end balljoints checked out carefully, especially if you live in pothole country. They are a wear item on these cars. On my 2008 Accord V6 sedan I went through over 9 ball joints, OEM and aftermarket in 180,000 miles. I also had to replace tie rod ends once and front sway bar end links twice. My rear calipers needed to be replaced due to sticking parking brake.

Make sure a mechanic goes over everything very closely.

Your engine and trans are very reliable. It's the rest of the car I'd be concerned about. You're getting into the time for possible alternator and starter failures. Be prepared for those to hav to be replaced. My OEM alternator died after 7 years. My starter was still original when I traded the car.

I have a 2009 V6 which has been amazingly reliable. At 135k miles it's starting to use oil. I agree with the posts above in that NO car is bulletproof, but Honda is as close as you can get. Do a Carfax. If you have the VIN ask a dealer service dept to get service records.

Forgot to mention: Has the timing belt been replaced? If not, at 155K miles, the car is due for timing belt and water pump and timing belt tensioner.

If you're willing to put in another $2000-$3000 then heck yes it's a great price for a stick shift.

For 4K I think that is a good deal. Granted the body is in good condition that is.

It's a really good overall vehicle.

Can you perform repairs such as changing alternators, clutches, or timing belts on your own? If so, there is ZERO reason to NOT buy this car. Even if you have to take it to a shop for repairs, I would consider it.

Yes, I have no issues learning how to do all that. I've worked a bit on the cramped engine space of my Celica GTS, such as changing alternator, etc. I have looked up videos and it seems totally doable. The vehicle is a salvage, but the only thing it affects is the left front panel and hood. Being that it has aftermarket rims on firestone indy 500's, a muffler delete, and an aftermarket intake, I think this car will treat me well. I appreciate everyone's input; picking it up this Thursday after getting it inspected at pep boys! Really excited, It's my first manual!
