Wow the audio /video link works too!!

"NOTE: A certain level of whine from the power
steering pump is considered normal. It can be
heard inside the vehicle with the engine running
between 1,200 – 2,000 rpm."
Thanks alot!
Anyone take their car in for this? i can't tell if its just cause of the K&N Filter or if its actually a whine... i mean i don't mind the turbo noise... lol just don't want it screwing up on me later on!
not yet maybe when close to being out of warranty. I haven't heard the whine myself but boy thats an involve process to remove that oil pump, I fear them screwing up my engine he he. If i were to do it I would probably wait until summer, too cold to have them messing with the engine and pouring out my synthetic for dino oil.
thanks aeoporta! lol yeahh i actually find myself looking through the "fixes" forums and going... oh wait maybe i hear that... knock on wood so far i've had no issues from anything, no crackles, whines, breaks, nothing but then again just only approaching 8k miles now... and i'm stuck in Canada where the dealers for some reason don't wanna get American Honda clearance to work on the car :( i want my free passenger side lower trim pc! lol
You cant drive the engine for 3 Hours after install!! its an all day project then, by the time they get your car in and make sure this is the problem and then go ahead and do it and then wait the 3 hours.
SYMPTOM
There is an engine whine between 2,000 – 3,500 rpm.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The surface finish on the balancer shaft gears causes
a whine when the engine is running.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the engine oil pump.

......

faulty balancer shaft gears <--> replace the engine oil pump, how's that connected?
In the repair directions, they're driven by the same parts.
Anyone actually gotten this fix under warranty? I brought my car to the dealership, they say they can't duplicate the problem.
oil pump

Thank you Princess. My 08 I4 coupe 31,900 miles is in for oil pump warranty repair. They are also looking at an oil leak at the timing cover.
Can anyone confirm this is only 08-09, my 10 is whining but only between 3 and 3.5 on the tach and only in first 2 gears
Can anyone tell me if this is on all 4 cy Or all 6 cy cars ? The pics make it hard to tell.

Many Thanks
From the TSB - "It might sound like a supercharger or turbocharger noise."

That explains the sound I heard when I recently test drove an 09 2.4L (24K miles on the odo). Really obvious at low RPM. "Whine" wouldn't be a good description - at least not on the one I heard.
my car does this. I'm planing on making them fix it with the next oil change. I really hate this sound
has anyone had this fixed yet? i hear a mild whine similar to whats in the audio, not as loud though, but i'm worried the extensive tear down and rebuild required with this they'll screw something else up!

anything wrong with just leaving it alone? could it actually be bad in the long run?

I would like to know this as well. I dropped my car off tonight for the rattle on cold startup (the VTC actuator) and I am tempted to call them about this in the morning and have them look at it too. Since the timing cover is coming off anyway - maybe this is the right time to do it?

I wonder if they stock these oil pumps? That looks like a pretty big part! I didn't realize the entire bottom of the engine is the oil pump? Or is it just integrated into it?

I was standing in the garage with my wife and I heard a car pull out from the street just up the road. When I heard the whine and exhaust note I immediately recognized it and said outloud "Honda Accord" without even seeing it. That was the "aha" moment for me when I decided to look in these forums to see if anyone was aware what the noise was. I really would like to know if this is just a noise, or if it can lead to other more significant problems down the road.

I thought this was just what they all sound like.
i don't even know if i fully understand the problem! it says the problem is the finish on the balancer shafts, but that the oil pump needs to be replaced?!?

i asked one dealer and he was just like no its no problem, just noise, and that they would only do it during the summer months and required leaving the car for 2days or something... but i can never tell if they just didn't wanna do it cause its covered by warranty or were being serious...

Just an update on mine...

As I said, I left the car overnight for them so they could replicate the issue with the cold start rattle. I called them in the morning and talked to the service rep and asked her if they could look into this whine sound and I explained it as a low-medium RPM whine that was really noticeable when driving around in parking lots, etc. I NEVER mentioned the TSB, and she said she would ask the tech to listen to it. (The techs didn't arrive yet).

So I got a call around noon and she said she had news...

The rattle was indeed the VTC actuator, and the whine was the oil pump. She said they had to order the parts so I could pick up the car and drop it off in the morning. I asked if it would be done in the evening and she said yes - so it will be a full day of work.

I was fully prepared to bring up the TSB if she called and said they couldn't hear it, but it wasn't necessary. I have to give them props for stepping up. But I have to wonder if this is a money maker in my case, since they can probably bill Honda for the standard hours on each job as if they were separate, but in reality it probably won't take that long since the jobs overlap.

I'll report back when the work is done and see if it really gets rid of the noise (both of the noises)!

which dealer are you taking your car to? i just moved to the Chi area and have NO clue which dealer would be best to take my car to... i've got an intake on the car so i don't want them giving me unnecessary shit for it and saying that's what causing the noise...
