19 Accord Touring 2.0 uncomfortable driving position + short term review

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting on the forum, and I would just like to share some of my thoughts after driving the car for about 8k km and also get the opinion of other accord owners. As the title says, it is the 2019 Touring 2.0t, pearl white with the tan interior, and the car is a lease. I feel like most reviewers do not mention the things I describe here so I hope this post helps people that are planning on buying one.

First, I would like to say that I think this car is one of the best values in the market right now and I really enjoy most of its features, power, handling, and aesthetics. However, a few things are bothering me since I got the car, and I am not sure if it is me or the car. The only thing I know is that I did not have some of these issues with any other car I had before. I also drive different cars from work and never experienced any of the problems I am about to describe.

So the main issue for me is the driving position and seat comfort. For reference, I am skinny, 1.82m height and weight about 76kg with long legs and a shorter torso. For some reason, I just can't find a position that I don't feel pain in my lower back, outside thighs, butt chicks, and left knee. I find the seat cushion too hard. It feels like I am sitting on a hard surface, especially so on the left side. Maybe it has something to do with the ventilated seats? The seat also feels strangely narrow for such a big car. I feel like my left thigh is sitting on top of the seat bolster which seems too high. That creates a terrible pressure point, which makes me want to move my left leg constantly. It does not help the fact that the footrest is on a strange angle/position and is not big enough for my foot. Besides being narrow, the seat is also too far from the left armrest to allow for keeping the hand on the wheel while resting the arm. Moving on, the lumbar support feels strange for some reason and seems to "deflate" after some time. Not sure if that is really happening or not, but I find myself having to adjust it constantly. As I mentioned, I have long legs, and that means I need to push the seat almost to the back, but when I do that, the steering wheel gets too far to reach comfortably. The depth range of movement of the steering wheel is abysmal, and for that reason, I can never find a proper seat adjustment. I have to choose between sitting closer and having my knees bent too much to the point of causing pain or sitting farther back and having to reach for the steering wheel with my arms almost fully extended, which after some time, can cause fatigue. Still, on the topic of the steering wheel, does anybody else feel like it is too hard? The palm of my hands gets sore after some time driving. Because of all that, I can never feel comfortable when driving the car, and that is really disappointing. I feel like I have to keep moving to relieve pressure points and pain across my body. It just doesn't feel right. And before anyone say it, I did a test drive the car before I bought it, but in the short time that I drove it, I was too busy having fun with the powerful engine and did not notice the seat comfort.

Other smaller issues and complaints I have:
- Android Auto and Google Maps cannot start navigation and always gives an error message. You can find more about it, searching on Google.
he Bluetooth connection is a bit unreliable, but I am not sure if it is the car or my Pixel 3 XL. I just know that sometimes I have to turn off the car, right after having turned it on, because the phone does not connect. I think the problem is the car because I tried rebooting the phone, and that does not fix the problem. Only turning the car off and on again fixes it.
  • The ventilated seat is a hit or miss. Sometimes I feel like it is doing something, and other times is just making noise. Waiting for the ac to cool down the cabin before turning it on, definitely makes a difference and I couldn't figure out if the seat ventilation turns on when you turn the car on remotely.
  • The cup holders are too big and do not keep taller bottles and cups securely in place.
  • This one does not bother me too much but I did notice panel gaps outside that are too wide for my taste. My front doors do not align flush with the back doors. The front hood also does not align properly. But like I said, these things don't bother me as much but they are noticeable.
  • Now, this next one maybe somebody could test and let me know. When using the lane keep assist, the system does not handle curves to the right as well as it does to the left. I had a 2017 Civic before that had the same behaviour. I am not sure if there is a reason for that or if it needs calibration but it is something that I noticed.
  • The armrest padding could be better. It seems the trend with this car is that every surface that you touch is hard.
  • The subwoofer rattles. It was a known issue with the Civic and it is with this car. I tried a few things but can't get rid of it completely so I end up avoiding some songs. But overall I don't find the system that bad. It could definitely be better if the subwoofer was placed somewhere else.
  • The automatic gearbox is not the smoothest. People say it gets better the more you drive it so let's see. But you can definitely feel it from second to third or the other way around in some situations. It does not happen all the time though.
  • The infotainment crashes from time to time. It can be annoying if you are using navigation. The screen turns black and the system reboots. I tried checking for updates over the air but didn't find any.
  • No sensor in the back doors is a bit of a hassle.
  • No mirror adjustment memory linked with the seats.
  • No height adjustment for the passenger seat.
  • It is hard to keep the phone in the right place when using the wireless charger. The surface area is too wide but the actual spot where it charges is way narrower and there is nothing to keep it in place. The phone can also get very hot and stop charging.
  • The car has too much power to be front-wheel drive only. It is easy to spin the front tires under stronger acceleration. An all-wheel-drive system would make it way better.

Now the pros:
  • The car is quick and the handling is very good. I actually like the pumped in engine noise. It makes the car feel sportier. Too bad I can almost never use all of its power. The traffic and roads here in Toronto are not the best.
  • The heated seats and steering wheel have worked very well so far but the winter hasn't really started yet so we will see.
  • I love Honda sensing and I think it works pretty well. It is definitely an improvement over the system in the 2017 Civic that I had. ACC works way better than in the Civic. Some people complain about the automatic emergency breaking being too sensitive but I didn't have any issues with that.
  • The automatic dual-zone climate control is awesome.
  • The steering wheel design is one of the best and I love the easy to use controls.
  • I love the remote control and walk away to lock features. Although the walk away to lock can get in the way when filling up the gas. If you wait too long the car locks and you can't open the fuel door so you have to touch the handle again or use the remote.
  • The LED headlights and fog lights are amazing.
  • The trunk is huge and the space for passengers in the back seats is great.
  • Having two keys linked to the different memory seats presets is very cool.
  • The head-up display is big and shows lots of information. I just wish it also showed the blind spot alert. I think some new Hyundai/Kia products include that.
  • Road noise is very acceptable when driving on good asphalt. Over rough pavement, it can get noisy though. I am not sure how much the noise canceling is actually blocking and how much is just the insulation.
  • The buttons and knobs feel nice and clicky and are well labeled and organized throughout the cabin.
  • I love how the climate control lowers the fan speed when using voice commands. I am not sure if other cars also do that.
  • The rain-sensing wipers are better than what I had on the Civic, but there is room for improvement. Sometimes they take too long to wipe or to detect the rain even in the highest setting.
  • The honda link app worked fairly well while I had the trial activated. I just wish we could link it to a Google home so we could start the car with a voice command.
  • I get lots of compliments!

I think I got everything but if somebody has any questions about the car please feel free to ask. And please let me know what you think about the seats and driving position. I know everybody is different but maybe somebody feels the same way I do.

Thank you!

Other than an annoying rattle coming from the HUD, I am over-the-moon about my new Accord Touring Hybrid. The rattle is easily fixed (see separate postings from hundreds of users who have experienced this problem) and now Honda has issue a technical service bulletin to fix it. I find the car very comfortable for long drives. I live in S. Florida and the AC is excellent, although the cooling function for the seat is only so-so.

I'm an iPhone guy, and CarPlay works fine for me. I'm a bit disappointed that Honda didn't go all the way and make CarPlay wireless, but being able to use it via a cable is acceptable, just not optimal.

My biggest gripe is that the side-view mirrors aren't tied to seat memory, as they were on my previous car, a Ford Fusion Hybrid. That feels chintzy to me. It's not even available as an option!

The other item that falls under the "chintzy" category is not having Auto on all the windows, just the two front ones. If I can automatically open all the windows and sunroof with my remote, at the very least I should be able to close all the windows automatically with the controls in the drivers-side arm rest.

All things considered, I'm very pleased with my purchase and expect to keep this Accord for a long time. Based on how many older Accords I see on the road, that should definitely be possible!

I am glad you are happy with your car! I wish I could feel the same. I don't have that rattle problem that so many people seem to have. Besides the side-view mirrors not syncing with the memory seats, the other issues you mentioned don't bother me as much.

Yesterday I wrote an email to Honda Canada Customer Service describing what I am going through. Let's see what they say.

On a side note, I drove a 2020 C300 and CLA these past few weeks, and the seats are night and day compared to the Accord. I know I am talking about more expensive cars (CLA not so much), but I would just like to point out that I don't have the problems I am describing with other vehicles. The C300 seats, in particular, are so comfy. The driving position is fantastic. Too bad I can't get the same features the Accord has on that vehicle without breaking the bank.
I certainly wanted to chime in based on your problem with the seats. I too am tall and thin. About 160lbs, 6'1", longer legs.

I bought my 2018 Sport 2.0T Auto last June and currently have just under 25k miles. I love most of the car, though agree it needs AWD for the power.
However, the drivers seat is atrocious. I drive about 2 hours a day, sometimes 3-5 hours. The seat was never super comfy, but I feel like it's gotten worse since I've owned it.
I will constantly fidget with the height and angles and lumbar to try and resolve it. It never works. I have the seat all the way back in the tracks.

The seat can definitely be described as concrete. I like a firm seat, but this is a bit much. I chose the fabric seats because I thought the leather was too hard!!!
Additionally, my seat developed a squeak in the lumbar area around 13k miles, which is super annoying.

The armrests are also a bit off. The one on the door does seem marginally too far away, and the center console is slightly too low. We're talking 1/16th of an inch so it's not immediately noticeable.
The steering wheel is definitely too hard as well. Like others have said, my arms are fully extended due to the seating position. After 20 minutes on the highway, my palms hurt.

The 10AT transmission is a dream once it has warmed up. But if it's still cold, I have to baby it or it feels like I'm badly slipping the clutch on a manual transmission.

My audio system has rebooted a few times. My bigger issue is Carplay not connecting or dropping in the midst of navigation. Maybe it's an apple thing? But it was never an issue in my previous VW.

Also somewhat odd, my brakes are starting to squeak. That seems impossible at 25k miles that I would need brakes, especially considering it's been mostly highway miles.

The drivers door handle now creaks/squeaks when I get in.

This is my first Honda (I did own an old 2006 Acura TSX for a year and adored it, but I digress). I've owned multiple VW's which have been quite unreliable, but were always great cars to drive. My Accord has been 100% reliable, but has a few too many oddities to make it a great experience.
I'm going to test drive a 2019 VW Golf Alltrack tomorrow and see if I like it. It's got a 6 year comprehensive warranty to cover the problems.

And, just as a side note. I thought Honda's held their value. My car has depreciated $11k in 1 year. That's EQUAL to a VW CC I bought in 2012.

Looks like the trend is if you're tall and thin with long legs and short torso, you're going to be uncomfortable.

Everyone is on the lookout for the best deal when they're buying, and seem to forget that the discount will also apply when the car is traded in. If you buy a $36k car for $32k, you have to factor that in to depreciation.

What are you basing the depreciation on? Was this a trade-in value on kbb? Retail v. trade-in is always going to hit you in the bank account.

Anyway, the value will level out. First year depreciation is brutal on almost all cars. That's why you don't see one-year leases -- the payments would either be heavily incentivized, or insanely expensive.

I am sad for you, but happy to know that someone else has the same issue that I have. At one point I started to think the problem was me. Since I don't think Honda will be able to do anything about it, I am going to try some cheap fix and see how it goes. I bought a seat cushion on Amazon over the weekend and it arrived today. I tested it on my way home from work and it looks like it has improved the comfort overall. You do lose some lateral support since you are sitting higher, but I think the extra comfort is worth the trade-off. I will test it further and report back.

I use android so I can't say anything about carplay connectivity problems. But as I mentioned, I do have that problem with my phone as well.

So far no squeaks and creaks. I hope it stays like that.

Isn't the golf getting a redesign for the 2020 year model? Not sure if it applies to the alltrack but you should do some research first otherwise you might lose a lot of money buying this generation.

I can't comment on the depreciation since my car is a lease. But as someone else mentioned, the first year can be the worst.

Unfortunately, it seems like that is true. I wish I knew that before.

I agree with this. Let's say you buy the car at the end of the year, you are basically buying a one-year-old vehicle which most of the time you can get a lot cheaper. So naturally, after one year of owning the car, if you decide to trade it in you are basically trading a two-year-old vehicle which will definitely have lost more value even though you only used for one year. Anyway, that is only an example.

My sister's '18 1.5 sport has no issues with using Waze for navi and Android auto, I'm sure I'd hear about it. Went with her on a 5 hour trip and it worked perfectly.

Her car had one issue I'm very aware of (panic call) that she pulled into a shopping center, parked, wanted to move the car, pushed the start button and NOTHING booted up, only error messages across the cluster and touch screen. I told her to shut it off, and go shopping. When she returned it booted normally, no errors, and by the time she pulled in her driveway, it did some kind of update, telling her before she shut the car off that the car needed to be left off for at least 2 hours to complete the update. She did drive the next day to where she bought it and their IT guy, not a regular tech, did some things, according to her, and it's been fine.

She won't drive with lane keeping on as she doesn't like it steering on its own. The CMBS has saved her a few times on blind turns. Luckily she wasn't rear ended.

The auto climate issue you mention is present in gen 7s as well. Maybe due to where they put the aspirator (how it gets cabin temp). It'll put out heat in winter, and when it thinks it's warm enough, suddenly it'll bleed in outside air and feel way cold. Summer, I have to run it on Lo to get max cooling and set it at 58 to keep fan speed up, unless driving south or west or in the sun for the system to automatically keep fan speed at a level that makes one feel cool.

Waze also works perfectly for me. The problem I mentioned is with Google Maps, not Waze.
I'm with bocaboy on his analysis of the 2019 Touring. It was simple to fix the HUD squeak/rattle/noise and can't understand why those that still complain about it haven't taken care of it themselves. I've done several 4 hour drives in my car since I bought it and find it to be VERY comfortable over long distances. I'm 5'11", so maybe if I was two inches taller, I wouldn't like it, but for me, it's a dream. Like bocaboy, I think the front seat cooling is pretty insipid - I can tell when it's on, but just barely. The cooling in my F150 is far superior. But, I don't really find the seats to be "hot" over long trips in the summer, so I can live with it.

The hybrid engine is smooth and powerful, while sipping gas. I appreciate the ACC more than I ever thought I would and find the Lane Departure Warning system to be well implemented. I'm very happy with the Entertainment Center. It handles phone calls beautifully, is easy to tune for radio functions, and the NAV updated flawlessly to 2020 maps. I think the sound system is excellent too.

I recently spent some time in both a 2019 Altima SL, and a 2020 Accord Sport 2.0T. Almost everything about the Accord is better, except for the seats. The front seats in the new Altima are easily the most comfortable I've ever experienced in a car. They're simultaneously soft and supportive (especially in the thigh area), and I feel almost weightless sitting in them (I guess the "Zero Gravity" nomenclature has some merit to it). The Accord's seats are fine, but the bottom cushion is somewhat firm and too flat. They're missing that extra bit of padding and support in the bottom cushion that makes the Altima's seats nearly perfect, at least for my 6'2", 200-lb, long-torso frame. The 10th Gen does have the most comfortable seats ever in an Accord, IMHO, just barely edging out the 9th gens'. Still, if the Accord had the Altima's seats, its interior would be pretty much perfect IMO (or as close to perfect as a car in this class can get).

Hi Jack, if you don't mind me asking, do you have a skinnier build or the opposite?

And did your system update the maps over the air? Or did you download it to the USB and updated it manually?

I haven't tested the Altima seats but did spend some time with a Maxima, which was excellent. I agree with you that if the Accord had those seats, it would be pretty much perfect.

I have been testing this seat cushion I got from Amazon, and it has improved the driving comfort considerably. It is a little bit strange sitting almost 3" above the seat, and you do lose a bit of support under the thigh, but I am not feeling as much pain in my lower back, left knee, and it made it easier to reach the steering wheel. I do wish I didn't have to use this, but that will have to do for now.
Hi Jack, if you don't mind me asking, do you have a skinnier build or the opposite?

Hi, stocovick - No, I don't mind you asking. I'm certainly not "skinny" lol. I weigh about 195# and again, am 5'11". My trouser size is 36 w, 32 inseam, if that helps. Most of the weight I'd like to lose, is in my gut, like many men.

I updated my maps using a 16 Gb USB, formatted to FAT 32. It took a VERY long time to download the update into the USB, and I have a fairly fast internet. It also took a long time to upload the update to the car, but not quite as long as the internet download. I did it with the engine running, but since I have a Hybrid, the gas engine was only idling about half the time.

Besides being narrow, the seat is also too far from the left armrest
Hi all. I purchased a 2.0T in January, and started to experience the exact same issues you mentioned with the seat being narrow, especially on the left side bolster. I also sometimes bang my knee on the center console area as it curves inward under the dashboard. Im starting to wonder if the seat is too far to towards the center. Does anyone know if the service department can adjust the seat to the left a few inches?

For the record, I'm 5' 10, 170 lbs, and I find the drivers seat and position very comfortable.

Not a chance. Seat position affects airbags and seat belt performance. It can't be moved.
As an observation, every one of the dozen or so car forums I have participated in over the last 15 years has an extensive thread where people complain about seat comfort. It is very much an individual thing. When I owned a BMW E60 545i with sport seats there were thousands of posts complaining about the seats and that was a very expensive car. My wife's Range Rover has probably the least comfortable front seats I remember sitting in. My F150 had probably the most comfortable seats. I've only had my Touring a month but I find the seats somewhat uncomfortable because the seat bottom is too short for me and leaves my thighs partially unsupported. Thigh extenders would solve that problem but probably too much into Acura territory for Accords to have those.
I purchased my 2.0T Sport in late February and also find the left driver's seat bolster a little uncomfortable. I am hoping once I put some miles on the car that it will soften up a bit (only turn 1K miles yesterday). The seats in my 16 Sport are were more comfortable. Still trying to figure out whether it's a firm bolster, seat cover seam, or seat frame. Note, it's only the left seat bolster that is an issue. At this point in time, it's only a minor annoyance. Hoping it softens up as I put some miles on the car.
Understood regarding air bags. My problem is also only with the left seat bolster. Im only at 2,500 miles so i'm also hoping that it softens over time.
there are times where it pays to be "large" I guess :) - sounds like the skinny jeans crowd doesn't like the seats, all y'all need more padding LOL

"obesity runs in my family!" "NOBODY runs in your family!" etc.

I also find the seat is too far to the right near the center console. Because of that, at least for me, it is hard to keep the elbows on the left armrest while holding the steering wheel. As others have pointed out, I don't think you can move the seat position like that. Now, one thing that I have found out, is that since I am not working full-time due to covid-19, and that means I am not sitting all day in an office chair, I find the seats to be better somewhat. It seems that it is taking longer for me to feel discomfort.
