Hey all,
I decided to make this my first post after stumbling on this fine site, and deciding to join.
Getting right to the topic at hand...My girlfriend drives a 2002 Accord VP with, of course, the 2.3L 4-cylinder. The car only had about 15k on it when she got it back in 2009, and now only has 45k miles. She's never kept track of her fuel consumption, but has always commented how it doesn't seem to get very far on a tank of fuel. I looked into it, making sure the air filter was fine, oil is clean, throttle body clean, and obviously, it's not yet due for a tune up, so I let that be..ending up scratching my head!
I tracked it down consistently over about 5 fillups of her doing about a 60/40 city/highway mix, commuting to work, averaging out to be no more than ~21.5mpg. I was astonished! My daily driver is a supercharged Park Avenue, which on an average fill up, I do nothing BUT city driving, from home to work, and still average 20.5mpg, with it having 140k no less.
At one point in time, she went away for a week, and I decided that it'd be a good experiment for me to drive her car every day while she was gone. I put on quite a few miles that week, about 800 or so, filling when I got to 1/4 tank. Now, keep in mind, during this test, with only a week's time, most of this driving was highway, versus her normal city driving, and I actually only averaged 24.5 mpg, whereas, I know I'm not an insane highway driver since I get between 27-29 with my Buick.
All the small stuff is also in order on that car. Alignment is absolutely perfect in every angle, front and rear, and the car wears 4 newer Michelin tires.
Suggestions?
Thanks guys!
