So this is a brand new 2012 Accord LX-P. Didn't even get my first oil change yet (30% according to MM). Just tonight after returning to my car to drive back home after dinner, this error message "CHECK FUEL CAP" pops up.
Checked the fuel cap...everything seems fine. What is this? I think I might just take it back to the dealer this week...
Hmm thanks. So it could take days or weeks to cycle off. I don't get how this could happen to a new car so soon...I always fill up all the way every time I refuel. Everything is still brand new with no sign of wear.
If you read the PDF I linked to, it has to do with the EVAP monitor. When the car does an EVAP check and the gas cap is either missing or not tight enough, you'll get a Check Fuel Cap message.
From Honda PDF said:
If a vehicle's fuel fill cap is loose or missing, and the ECM/PCM detects and EVAP system leak when it runs the EVAP monitor, the Check Fuel Cap message appears on the information display when the engine is started.
Heh it happened to me yesterday too. Was definitely a WTF moment, since I filled up back on Tuesday, 150 miles prior. And I always spin until I hear 5+ clicks. You can clear the indicator by pressing the button.
Mine went away later last night. Not there this morning.
I had that problem Accord when you pump your gas you have to put gas cap mon tight. Take it to dealer they can replace the whole gas cap free. No problems
Happened to me after driving about 440 miles on one tank of gas. The fuel light usually comes on at around 400-420 miles, but I guess I was driving pretty conservatively that tank. Anyway, I got out of the car, tightened the gas cap, and it went away after 1-2 days.
I have a 2012 Crosstour, new in October with less than 5000 miles and 40% oil life on the original oil- check fuel cap message came on last sunday at 1 pm. My wife tanked up Friday before that. I checked the cap about 4 times. Finally at about 3:30pm the message went off. Great! Then Tuesday night about 9:30pm the check engine light came on. I checked the cap again several times, removing it and re-tightening hoping to clear the light. I took it to the dealer this morning, and the service writer opened the gas cap door and the cap almost fell off in his hands. They all look at me like I'm a fool. They cleared the codes- (PO455 and PO456- fuel evap system and large leak) and told me I have to be certain to properly tighten the cap. Gosh- never thought of that. After 40 years of driving and having NEVER lost a gas cap I think I've got that one down. Has anyone tried an after market cap. I've put Stant locking caps on my work vehicles and they seem pretty good-
