This may be a silly question, but it's one I must ask. How many quarts of transmission fluid does a transmission actually hold? And what's the average that comes out during a standard drain & fill?

Straight from the factory service manual (V6 Supplement):
3.5 US qt at change
7.9 US qt at overhaul

So usually only around 3.5qt comes out, but the transmission holds 7.9qt.

You can measure how much came out and put that much back in.

Just finished my third drain / refill of ATF on our 2012 EX-L V6 Accord. Yup, like @Hudouc says, about 3-1/2 quarts drained out each time. I measured this using a marked, graduated jug.

We're using Idemitsu ATF H-Plus (it's Idemitsu's specific offering for Honda ATF DW-1).
