Pretty sure the one in my 1997 is original. 172k miles. Runs great, engine has no hesitation.

Leave filter alone or replace?

You are probably better off replacing it. If you don’t you should be alright, however try to make sure you have at least a quarter tank of fuel at all times; sediments that have collected in the tank over time may bypass the old, worn filter and go through the lines and injectors, plugging them up and creating problems.

Yeah, changing that fuel filter is a royal PIA too. I changed mine out at about 200k miles only because I was replacing the rear brake lines and Master Cylinder, and that provided "easier" access to the fuel filter.
