"(CNN) -- An additional 440,000 Honda vehicles are being added to a recall initially announced in November to repair a potential defect in airbag inflation systems, American Honda Motor Co. said Friday.

The 2001 Honda Civic is among the vehicles covered by the recall.

The recall involves driver-side airbags in certain 2001-02 Honda Accords, 2001 Civics and 2002-03 Acura TLs, the company said in a news release.

The affected vehicles will require the replacement of the steering-wheel-mounted airbag inflator.

"In some vehicles, airbag inflators can produce over-pressurization of the driver's [front] airbag inflator mechanism during airbag deployment," the release said. "If an affected inflator deploys, the increased internal pressure may cause the inflator casing to rupture. Metal fragments could pass through the cloth airbag cushion material, possibly causing an injury or fatality to vehicle occupants."

Honda spokesman Chris Noughtan said the potential defect has resulted in six known injuries and one known death.

The company will send a recall notice in the mail over the next few months, the release said. Owners may check their car's recall status by visiting the Honda "Owner Link" Web site at www.owners.honda.com/recalls or the Acura "My Acura" Web site at www.owners.acura.com/recalls.

"Only certain vehicles are affected, and concerned owners of 2001-2002 Accords, 2001 Civics and 2002-2003 Acura TLs are encouraged to wait to receive a recall notice in the mail before scheduling an appointment with their local dealer," the company said."

According to ownerlink mine (built in June 02) is not included in the recall, but I saw a post on another 6thGen site where an 02 (built in July 01) owner saw that his is. I assume the recall covers late 01 to early 02 VINs.

Scary that the initial airbag recall didn't include the 02's.

Cajun and All:

My '02 was built in November of 2001, per the door jam plate. Original sale is reported as August 2002. (Per CarFAX and AutoCheck, first title was issued 08/05/02.) However, my check with AHOA indicates no recalls apply to my car. :dunno:

Honda recalls 440,000 Accords, Civics for lethal airbag risk

DETROIT (Reuters) — Honda said Friday that it is recalling another 440,000 vehicles, including some of its best-selling Accord and Civic models, for a potentially lethal airbag defect.

Honda said the airbag inflators in some of its top-selling sedans can rupture because of too much air pressure, causing metal fragments to shoot through the airbag and strike vehicle occupants.

One fatality and a number of injuries have been linked to the defect, Honda spokesman Sage Marie said.

The recall covers certain 2001 and 2002 Accords, 2001 Civics and some 2002 and 2003 model Acura TL sedans. The driver's side airbag is the defective component.

Honda said owners of those models can check to see if their vehicle is covered by the recall by checking the automaker's website at www.owners.honda.com/recalls. The site requires registration.

The Japanese automaker said it is encouraging owners to wait until they receive a recall notice to go to a dealer and have the inflator for the steering-wheel airbag replaced.

Honda had originally announced that it would recall some 2001 Accord and Civic sedans for the defect last November.

The notice issued Friday added 440,000 vehicles to the recall.

First of all, I cant find the SB with this recall, just the one from 2008 (08-093). Can someone post it hear please?

I'm confused, I'm looking at all the relevant recalls and TSB's, and all of them, That I personally have, show VIN's of 1HGCG...(US made) and I'm a JHMCG...(JAPAN made). Am I to assume that cars made in Japan are not included? Or is this just a VIN examples?

Examples (of problems I need fixing (under warranty):
Front seat buckles, cant find (I can find REAR seat buckles. Has 1HGCG VIN only. I have intermittent Side Air Bag warning line problem (with nothing in the seat). If I pull on the set buckle, the light goes out. Belts dont retract.
Air bag horn plate. 01-018. Has 1HGCG VIN only. I had to recover a rattling screw from inside the horn/air bag area. If they are in there they should fix this.
I'm trying to have printout when I go to the dealer...

Bruce,

I don't have the SB, but the NHTSA's website has info on the recall that you could print out. Your best bet would be to register your car at Honda's ownerlink site. Enter your VIN and it will tell you all of the recalls related to your car. You could also call Honda Corp. I did when this first came out and they confirmed that my VIN is excluded.
