The 9th gen Accord better be a big improvement over the 8th gen. No more marginal stuff. Come on Honda!

A 10Best victor 26 times, the Accord has pretty much exhausted all of the glowing adjectives that D. Webster ever cataloged. The descriptor that characterizes the car right now, however, is “aging.”

Until we tackled our handling loop, in fact, the Accord felt like a midpack finisher. Its transmission offers only five speeds. It tied with the Camry for dullest c0ckpit styling. Its 190-hp engine churns out the least torque. There’s no exterior latch to open the trunk. And it proved the noisiest at full throttle—a barrage of intake roar and singing belts and thrumming valves.

On our handling loop, however, the Accord quickly became an ally, processing all dynamic inputs with confidence and immediacy. It felt uncrashable. The steering reveals road textures; it talks to you about remaining lateral grip; it gladly pursues one steady path with no midstream corrections. The brakes allow those gratifyingly smooth panic stops that you can magically hold on the edge of anti-lock. The chassis is so rarely surprised that it makes its driver feel invincible.

Sample logbook entries: “Close, short-travel pedals with no wasted movement.” “Crisp, purposeful steering that requires little attention.” “A platform so sound that not even Sherman in one of his forefathers’ tanks could bend it.” “Never hunting for gears midcorner.”

The ninth-gen Accord arrives this fall, so the “old” car’s performance here is all that more stunning. Notice, however, that the Accord finished one meager point ahead of the Optima, which was only two points in front of the Sonata. Pretty much a statistical tie. Had even one editor been harsher in judging, say, the Accord’s lackluster interior, the car’s second-place ranking might well have been snagged by the Optima.

Notice that in steering feel, brake feel, and handling, the Accord marginally bested the Sonata this time out. For one thing, this Accord was 0.5 second quicker than the “Practically Chic” California car, but it also demonstrated better braking distances and slightly better skidpad grip.

Yea, hyundai &kia have both came a looooooooong way these past few years, while honda has been stagnent. It saddens me. Always been a huge honda fan

I went to look at a turbo4 optima (I think SX? Whatever the highest one is)

Its styling and driving is pretty spot on but I couldn't get over the disgusting interior layout. Maybe I have OCD about needing a symmetrical layout but it just wasn't right. At all.

I think the only reason (at least to me) that the exterior syling is somewhat attractive is bcause kia def stole some styling, cues from the accord. But I guess if imitation is the best form of flattery...

Except for the headlight enclosures, I don't see much of a resemblance to an Accord, but the details are in the driving. Too bad C and D doesn't test drive resale values cause what you'd find is the Kia drops like a penthouse elevator after leaving the dealer's lot.
And the VW is as plain jane a sedan as you can get.

I for one have decided that my next new car will not be a Honda or an Accord, I think I need to try something different after using the same brand/model since my first car in 1990.

Depending on my finances when I'm due a new car, I might step up to Acura, BMW or Benz.

I think, optima Grill design resembles Coupe. What are the handling and performance differences between Accord EX vs LXP. Other than cornering, does EX handles better than LXP . Is this comparison true for even base models. Surprised about Camry ranking.

EX and LXP are identical except for slight engine tweaks. The EX makes 190hp over the LX's 177hp due to a higher redline and re-tuned exhaust. Handling between he two is identical

A. I think VW deserves credit for building better driving, classy cars. I also think Honda and the rest of the car world should thank VW for being so unreliable. If VW weren’t so unreliable, they’d take away a lot of market share.

B. I was surprised to see that the Sonata/Optima returned the lowest fuel mileage of the test.

My Wife has the 2012 Accord EX-L (about 6000 miles) and I have a 2012 Sonata limited Pzev (about 1000 miles), and I think the review is pretty accurate.

There is something to be said about Accord reliability and just how nice and predictable it drives. The 2.4 is a benchmark motor and I prefer the no nonsense 5 speed slush box.

The Sonata has A LOT more options for the price, (the limited was about $1500 cheaper) The car feels/drives smaller than the accord. Fit in finish actually seem better than the accord not to mention a larger trunk with 60/40 split rear seats.

Coming from VW's/Audi's the past 10 years (2004 Allroad 2002/2005 GTI and 2008 GTI. )
I was kinda disappointed when I test drove the new Passat. The simple reason was the 2.5 5-cylinder. It seamed very underpowered compared to both Accord and Sonata. I have also been kinda shy towards VW since they changed there warranty to 3 years 36K.

Test sheet.

I was expecting Optima EX to perform better than Sonata.

I almost bought the Optima because I'm a big fan of Peter Schreyer designed cars. But my research and understanding is that underneath the sheet metal the cars are clones...

* actually I just read the test sheet, it is curious how performance is better with the Sonata, There is a disclaimer *These objective scores are calculated from the vehicles’ dimensions, capacities, rebates and extras, and/or test results.*

This really changes things, VW is VERY aggressive with pricing and rebates with the Passat which apparently has a strong influence on overall results.
I do know APR financing/rebates was actually better with Hyundai over Kia.

Sonata is SE version. Probably that helped Sonata over Optima.

EX has larger front brake rotors, adds a front strut tower brace, and also has larger wheels.

I believe the part numbers for springs/struts are also different.

Nothing will change my love for Honda  whether it makes it to 2nd place or not. Never did I once look at any reviews before buying my 7th gen nor would I in future...............

I don't agree with it tho, Camry should've ranked better then Sonata for sure, I drove a 2012 Sonata and the car just doesn't feel right(cant believe it how people where comparing it to Honda). They didn't look at Atlima but It should've been up on top as well.

As for the Passat, I was really impressed when I drove a 2012 model and also 2013 model;)
