I remember people taking out the 51 series batteries from the 7th Gens and replacing them with 35 series. Anyone done this on a 9th Gen?

I got my hands on an Optima Yellow Top for dirt cheap and was just wondering if it would fit. The base where the battery sits seems big enough but the tie down would def have to be replaced.
 
Wife's '09 Civic Si has Group 51R with no real room for much larger. I preemptively replaced it with an AGM. Only one I could find in 51 was Exide branded.

If you want to go larger in a 9th gen, I'd first consider a Group 24

I've been thinking about getting an AGM for my "summer only" Nissan 240sx. Do you not drive your Civic often? How is the battery working out?

My 2001 Miata had an AGM battery and I had trouble keeping it charged up. I did not drive it all that much a little over 3000 miles in 5 years. If there was a chance of bed weather it stayed in and was only used on Miata Club tours and other fun outings.
No more AGM batteries for me.

You want an AGM battery in a Miata because of the battery's location in the trunk. No battery is going to stay charged with the kind of driving your Miata sees without the help of good quality trickle charger.

I drive a half hour to and from work every day so the charging shouldn't be an issue. 17k in 11 months. :(
 
I usually took the car out for a nice drive every 2 or 3 weeks and I had a trickle charger as well. It still died an early death.
 
My dealer recommends it as the battery on the I4 won't last 2 years (which I was told by the service manager)
 
Waste of money IMHO. Just replace the battery when it dies unless you have issues with cold start (doubtful) or headlight dimming due to transient power draw (subs). If you don't have dimming issues this will not effect operation of the car while it is running.

If the battery dies in 2 years (again doubtful) then put in a bigger battery in 2 years.

If you want to upgrade just measure the battery holder and make sure whatever you put in fits. Probably the same holder as the V6 but I don't know that for a fact.

The only other time I would suggest a battery replacement is if you often tailgate and frequently run electronics for a long period of time with the car off. If you are a modder money can be spent elsewhere on better mods.

Hmmm...maybe that's true up in Canada. My factory 51 is still doing the job at 4+ years old.

Very unlikely an increase in battery size will have any effect on battery life except in extreme conditions (putting almost no miles on the car).

I believe batteries mostly die due to chemical changes/corrosion and other aging problems which would be mostly independent of size, unless the battery in question is undersized for it's application (which 8th gen is not or we would know by now).

If your battery dies in 2 years in a car where it is not a common known problem it is likely a latent defect from when it was manufactured.
 
It's a motorcycle batt in the i4......replace it and get stronger starts, less glitches with the infotainment system and less headlight flicker....trust me
