I have put in an order on a sweet Accord Sedan EX-L V6, and very excited about it. I test drove both the v6 and the 4 a number of times, and was thoroughly impressed with the additional power, luxury, and refinement of the v6.

Here's the problem. Wanting to be super responsible about how I spend my money, I am beginning to think it is more than I need or want to financially commit to.

The additional costs will include: additional purchase price, more gas, somewhat more expensive maintenance, and possibly more expensive insurance. Especially when you map it out over 10 or more years, and what that $ could be doing in an effective investment elsewhere, it adds up.

I really really love the V6, and would be tickled to own it. Feels better than an Acura TL, without drawing that kind of attention. I just don't know if I'd really be able to enjoy it and feel good about the purchase.

Any others wrestle with this? Comments on specifics of additional costs involved?

Many thanks!

If the v6 makes you happier, then it's a no brainer. The exl 4 cyl is 28-29k? What's another 2k for the v6? Insurance wouldn't be that much higher.

I remember the times when I was still deciding, I was like you too! Lol! I would definitely follow what you really want! I purchased a v6 coupe and I never regret my decision.

V6 mpg isnt too bad at all, I average like 28mpg per tank.

I assure you, you'll never regret getting the v6!

Extra power, dual exhaust and led drl are worth the extra 2k if you ask me :)

I tried both too, but once I drove the V6, it was all over, just loved it, is such fun to drive. I would say just get what you want, the last thing you want to do is to always wonder if you should have opted for the V6. If you like it get it, life is too short :)

Admittedly I have become more conservative as I have aged, but I traded my 2005 EX-L-V6 for the the 2013 EX-L with I-4. I decided why give more than $2,000 more and get 2/3 the gas mileage and the additional maintenance expense of the V6. I didnt need the additional power. My car easily gets to 70 mph. I didnt want to face the expense again of replacing the timing belt, water pump, etc. Now if you arent keeping it long enough for that expense, then you won't have it. I will just keep enjoy my average 32 mpg compared to my 22 avg mpg and save the $2000 toward my next Accord...just the way I look at things....

Ref bold....most likely not. Higher initial cost but more content and higher resale. Plus you're spared any CVT beginning of life issues.

Buy it and enjoy it,

Take it from a guy who HAS the V6...

You REALLY want the 6 !!!!

MPG is very competitive for a 6 vs 4.

Had a 2010 exl 4 cyl a 2011 exl nav 4 cyl now have a 2013 exl v6. Trust me if you plan on keeping it for a while you wont have to deal with how noisy a 4cyl gets after a while the leds really make the car stand out compared to other cars on the road the dual exaust makes the rear look more finished. The insurance shouldn't even be a noticeable difference. the gas mileage is rated 6mpg diff in the city but other than that every thing else is a plus... by the way a v6 holds better resale value for some reason

Mine has the V6 and I'm so glad it does. I like that it's only turning about 2K RPMs at 70MPH vs. about 2850 RPMs with the 4 banger.

Once you get a V6 its hard too look back, as far as maintenance is the same as the 4-Cyl except for the timing belt but you dont have to worry about until at least 100K these car are trouble-free get the V6:thmsup:

The extra power is definitely worth it.
The LED DRL's, dual exhaust and it essentially has a tried and true engine platform of the previous gen and traditional transmission combo will be less worrisome than the entirely new CVT.

2k for less worries on the engine bay is already worth it and you get extras :naughty:

As for gas it is like with any modern engine you play you pay just that older cars there was no computer to remind you that you are paying

I have the V6 and have no regrets.....

Some Pluses
(1) Very little if any difference in gas mileage. I routinely get 37-40 mpg

(2) Easier to sell/higher trade-in because there are so few (relatively) on the resale market when the time comes. There will be people waiting for your car.

(3) Exhilarating sound and acceleration

Some minuses
(1) The 6 speed automatic transmission has issues of it's own. There are threads here about it; I would read them very carefully and pay attention to the trans during test-drives. (The I4 gets the CVT; completely different)

(2) There are potential maintenance differences....depending what might go wrong. Accessibility of various sensors and components are much more difficult (time consuming) on a V6. Thus; higher cost for certain repairs. I'm not talking like oil changes and that; I mean other repairs that may or may not ever be necessary.

+1!

I agree with everybody that the V6 is very nice and powerful. As stated above pay attention to the tranny, take it for a test drive. Try to go on a straight road that has traffic lights and if it turns red take your foot of the gas and see what the trans does. Some people like/dislike the downshifting it does. All in all it is a great car.

Great discussion question posted. I myself am contemplating between the V6 and i-4. I've heard rumor's that the V6 engine is bulletproof as for the i-4 it does encounter problems more often comparing the 6. Any suggestions or thoughts on this. For myself I know I want something that's going to be good on gas as my commute will be highway/rush hour traffic.

Engine alone is worth the $2K. LED DRLs, Homelink, and courtesy lights are icing on the cake!!!
