Hey guys, I just recently totaled my Accord driving on the highway, and I'm thinking about purchasing the new 2010 Mustang instead of another Accord to replace my car. Can I have some insight/input from you fellow members on this decision? pros and cons of both cars would be greatly appreciated. I'm having a hard time picking which car to go with, and I need to pick fast.

I live in Houston Texas

if you go with the mustang, i'd say get at least a GT. the v6 model is WAAAAYYYY under powered and the MPG difference is about 3 or 4 MPG between the v6 and the GT.

1- What model Accord did you have?
2- What model Mustang are you considering?
3- Where do you live?

New style is better. a regular v6 version is a dog, not worth the money, anything above GT is where the fun begins.

I personally would look at a G37s myself. Ford started to build solid cars, it all depends on the price your willing to pay.

Eww Mustangs... Eww.

I'm not a fan of them, and most people I know who drive them are "D's."

If you're in the price range of a V6 mustang ~23k? you should take a look at the Chevy Camero... the V6 Camero puts out as much hp as the V8 mustang! it's also similar in price to the V6 Mustang.

I've heard of some quality issues in the first run but for 100 more hp..? i'll take my chances ;) expect to pay just a tad bit more as dealers are having trouble keeping these cars on the lot!

Hey guys, I just recently totaled my Accord driving on the highway, and I'm thinking about purchasing the new 2010 Mustang ...
In my dreams I want two new cars, a practical car and a fun car. Back when I was single I did that, bought a new 95 Miata for the second fun car (and garaged it during our snowy winters). Then I got married, responsibilities, couldn't afford both, and had to sell the Miata. :boohoo:

So after I bought my 2009 Accord, I started playing that fantasy again (this time with the Mustang, because I used to own one for 5 years, after I graduated from college). I rented a 2009 Mustang V6 last November and drove it all over Arizona when I visited my brother. It wasn't the V8, and it had much less room than the Accord, but hey, it was really fun to drive :D, handled great, had good build quality (no rattles), and great mileage (30 MPG highway). And the 2010 Mustang is significantly redesigned, with a significantly upgraded interior, etc. However, home finances and famaily priorities again ruled out that two car fantasy (RIP).

If you can only have one car, here's my advice (as a former Mustang owner). If you don't live in the snow belt, and you're happy with the sport coupe concept and the Mustang - then I say first rent one for a week (Hertz or otherwise) - because it's a big change from the Accord. Then if you're still happy after living with it for a week, then go for it!! Ford has great build quality, they're financially stable, the new 2010 Mustang is a really cool looking car, and it's an American icon. However, if you're in the snow belt (try the rental thing in winter), proceed with caution, and hope that the the Mustang's electronic stability control ("Advance Trak", now standard on all 2010 Mustangs) counteracts any nose-heavy RWD coupe's tendency to fishtail in slippery winter roads.

In either case, best wishes with your decision, cheers!

Don't settle for anything less than a GT if you want a Mustang. It's GT and up or no Mustangs at all imo.

Also, if you just totaled your Accord, I can't imagine what your insurance rates would be like if you get a higher-end sports car. Insurance for the Mustang is pretty much the reason I went with Accord instead.

I agree with Penguin... forget the Stang and get a Camaro
OK - so this is the ancient Mustang verus Camaro rivalry (I'm in the Mustang camp).... the Mustang is the better car

Who anybody knowing anything about cars would buy 4.0L engine that makes 210HP and car that has solid rear axle in 2009?
because it's less stuff to fix after the rear end has been smashed after that accident :dunno:

you're right about the engine part though

When I was looking for replacements for my 08 coupe I seriously considered the Mustang. For what it is, I was very impressed. Despite the rear axle, it was fun to drive and it was only notciably at higher speeds over bumpy, uneven roads. Overall it was buttoned down and comfortable. The dealership experience and availability were huge reasons why I ultimately didn't end up in one. I wanted a fully loaded model, with SYNC, and dealers said that model was just a "marketing tool". :thumbsdow

If you can wait awhile, the Ecoboost V6 is supposded to kick @$$. I just read a review about the new engine in the . . . Taurus? Freestyle?? I can't remember.

If you get the V6 Mustang, I guarantee you will regret it, especially comming from an Accord - even if you had a 4 cylinder Accord, you have no idea how much of a dog the V6 Mustang is. For 2009, it is a pathetic joke of a drivetrain. Slow revs, no power, and thirstier than any Accord ever built. As many have said already, you need to get the GT if you are going to get any Mustang. Compared to your 2008 Accord, the V6 Mustang will feel like the old 4 cylinder Mustangs from the late 1970's..... I know, I drove a 2007 V6 Mustang with the manual trans, it was :thumbsdow

For the equivalent in price, you can get the new Camaro with a 300 hp, DOHC, 24 valve V6 and 6 speed transmission (either auto or manual)..... this Camaro blows the V6 Mustang away in performance, handling, power, and economy (gets about 3-4 mpgs better).

Post this question at a Mustang site and you'll get different replies. I'm a fan of the Accord AND Mustang, so I'll have to disagree with some of this thread.

"...the V6 Mustang will feel like the old 4 cylinder Mustangs from the late 1970's"
"...the v6 model is WAAAAYYYY under powered..."
"Who anybody knowing anything about cars would buy 4.0L engine that makes 210HP and car that has solid rear axle in 2009?"

Ford finally put a legit V6 in the Mustang in 05. Yes, it only makes 210 HP, but it's also rated at 240 lbs.-ft. of torque. Several car mags clocked it at <7.0s 0-60. The only 4.0L/Mustang I've been in was an A/T, but to me it pulled hard enough to be fun.

"...prepare to spend twice as much on gas if you get a mustang gt. if u get a mustang, u must buy a v8."

Twice as much? A friend of mine gets 26 mpg with his M/T 09 GT. His commute is mostly highway, but even with more city driving it won't be anywhere near twice as much as a V6 Accord.

Tuanita, you need to just go drive one. If your heart starts racing and you fall in love with it, buy it. Stating the obvious, but Mustangs aren't practical cars. The back seat is only suitable for children. They gets mediocre mpg's. Insurance will be higher. They ride like an old truck on rough roads.

BUT...nothing quite like a Mustang.

Having had 2 Mustangs a few things come into play. Where do you live? If you plan on driving this in the snow you will be screwed. Even the rain can get a little slippery. So the Accord will be better. If you live in a warmer climate Get the mustang GT. Like said before dont get the V6. If your thinking about the V6 just get the Accord. Gas wont be a problem. With 4.10 gears, intake and a custom tune I was able to get 28 highway driving 65 mph. When it comes to mods there is nothing like a Mustang.

I agree with Cajun. Of course, who wouldn't want the Mustang's V8 (I would), but if you've got budget limits, a family, kids & dogs to feed, kids college to save for, car insurance to pay, etc - the Mustang V6 is both a good engine and not the dog it's accused of being (mostly by people who've never even driven it - I have).

"...the v6 model is WAAAAYYYY under powered..."

Not so - look at these track times (from CR), I can find others, they're similar - the Mustang V6 beats the Accord I4 and nearly matches the Accord V6

Accord I4 AT 9.8 sec (0-60), 17.5@83 (1/4 mile)
Mustang V6 AT 7.5 sec (0-60), 16.0@89 (1/4 mile)
Accord V6 AT 7.4 sec (0-60), 15.8@93 (1/4 mile)
Mustang V8 AT 5.5 sec (0-60), 14.2@100 (1/4 mile)

" ....it is a pathetic joke of a drivetrain...."

While it's not the DOHC with hi-tech variable cylinder cutoff like the Accord, or the newer DOHC Ford 268HP V6, or the V6 jewells from Infiniti, etc - it's an average engine with far above reliability per CR. When I drove it for a week, it had great torque, was a willing engine, average noise, etc.

"... for the equivalent in price, you can get the new Camaro ...."

Not true, the Camaro is more expensive accross the board. Look at Edmunds.com, these are 2010 model pricing...

Mustang V6 coupe, base MSRP range $20,995 - $23,995
Camaro V6 coupe, base MSRP range $22,245 - $26,580
Mustang V8 coupe, base MSRP range $27,995 - $30,995
Camaro V8 couple, base MSRP range $30,245 - $33,430

Plus right now the Camaro is having its "15 minutes of hot car fame" (just like the Boxster, Miata, original Accord, Mini, etc had after their introductions) - meaning, there's no factory incentives, and you'll probably pay MSRP or higher. The Mustang has factory incentives ($500 - $1000) & special financing, so you'll walk out the door with a deal under MSRP.

Try out both the Mustang and Camaro, and look at the REAL pricing you'd get after negotiating with a dealer, and then decide where the better value is. To me, it's the Mustang, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, the old Camaro/Mustang rivaly continues on (hey, it wouldn't be any fun it there wasn't that rivalry :naughty: )
