Did my very first "mod" on the 6-6 yesterday--a Curt trailer hitch.

So I installed my eK&N SRI a couple weeks ago and so far so good, no CEL. The pipe and fittings are a $50 setup from eBay and I bought a genuine K&N filter, which came with a sticker so the setup looks legit! My thought is that the car doesn't know if there's a $50 or $300 piece of metal tube attached to the throttle body--it's the filter that counts. No gains in power obviously, but it sounds awesome, especially as vtec kicks in.

Oh, and the dealer I bought the car from had claimed to change the oil and filters, but strangely, the air filter I pulled out appeared to be the original!

After seeing that the dealership lied about changing the air filter, I don't trust that they actually did any maintenance. So over the past couple weeks I:

  • Changed oil, used 0w20 synth and OEM Honda filter and crush washer
  • Changed manual trans fluid, used Honda OEM fluid (fixed hard shifting, especially into 3rd)
  • Bled brakes and replaced with Honda brake fluid
  • Drained and filled power steering with Honda fluid
  • checked spark plugs since I doubt they've been done anytime recently. It didn't look horrible so I don't think it's critical at this moment. I'll change them soon though.

I cobbled together a video of before and after the SRI install if anyone is curious what this setup sounds like:

Winter is just around the corner so I used this weekend's nice weather to get the 6-6 winterized. It got a good wash and I put down a base of M-sealer and topped with a coat of Ice Spray wax. I've had good luck with this combo as it needs to stand up to a Maine winter. The Tire Kicker is easy to put on and looks really good, until it wears off.

Look at it sparkle!

I'm happy that I can use the 17" wheels from my beloved Mazda 6 wagon on the Accord. These were my winter wheels for the wagon and they'll be my winters for the Accord. I had painted them black and they could use a touch up.

Looks nice.

Where do you live? To keep a car that clean, you don't want to live in snow country. :)

Maine, so total snow country 🌨 It only looks good for about a day, but the important thing is that it's keeping road salt off the paint!
Not only do you have salt on the road, but in the air too, and more so if you're on the coast.

Here in Montana, not much road salt and no nearby ocean. And, naturally low humidity. Any rust my car has is merely surface rust. I don't need to worry much about rusted bolts.

Well, I'll admit that my cheap intake experiment didn't work out. CEL would come on and go off by itself intermittently due to running rich. So it had to come off, but if course I got accustomed to that great sucking sound. So I bought the Takeda SRI and installed it without any issues. Looks great, sounds great, no CEL.

This weekend I finally got around to painting my calipers red with some leftover POR-15. The rims don't show much but at least now there's a little touch of color on this wall of silver. Kind of goes with the taillights.

Changed the oil yesterday and finally got around to changing the PCV valve. I wonder if it was the original? 😬 Sure wasn't rattling!

In the spirit of Halloween, here is a ghostly pic from last night of the Accord burning off its MMO piston soak. It has always consumed a quart every 3-4k miles so let's see if this makes a difference.

Winter warrior mode: activated. This past spring I bought a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 winter tires, 225/50r17 at a hefty discount. On the fronts I used 5mm spacers to give a little more clearance from the caliper edge. I haven't driven on them long enough to offer an opinion on the tires yet. I should definitely repaint the wheels before next winter.

Hakka 8's are studded, aren't they? Is there a time restriction in Maine when you can run studded tires?

They are studdable but mine are unstudded. I wouldn't do studded again. The noise is off the charts and the roads stay pretty plowed where I live. I think you have to have studded tires off by May? But the police here are too busy ignoring meth/fentanyl zombies to bother with checking people's tires...

Agree on the noise. I had studded tires on one or two work vans years ago; never again. They sound like you're driving on crushed glass when you're on dry pavement, which is far more often here than having ice or snow covered roads. And, some of the studs will vacate the premises over the winter.
