I suggest you check your oil level more often. You're killing your engine slowly by running it low on oil like that.
Just my $.02 for free, it's obviously your car and you can do what you'd like to it. I tend to take overly good care of machines my life may depend on.

Agreed. It's big time on my radar, for reals this time.
Will be checking oil level often so I don't run low again.

Update: 4.5 qts and new filter and car is running great again. No 'helicopter' type noise (no top end / valve / VCT noise - it's gone after two cold starts and 120 miles)
Many more drives with alternator with new brushes and the charging issue and light are gone as well.
