In the 20 years I've been driving, I have a fool proof habit of when to lock my car to be certain I never lock my keys in there. Just saying, I'm diligent about locking my car. Since I've had this '14 Accord LX, got it in May, I keep going to my car to go somewhere and its already unlocked. Just to be sure I'm not losing my mind, I've made a conscious effort to notice when I lock it, and sometimes I go back and do it a second time.

Just to prove that its doing this, I was actually IN the car getting something out and it spontaneously unlocked all of its doors.

Has anyone else had this trouble, and happen to know what can be done about it?

I was washing my EX several weeks ago and had the fob in my pocket. I kept hearing the car locking and then unlocking. I took the keys back into my garage and that stop the nonsense. I wish I had a plain old key. While the smart key is nice at times I would prefer just a key.

That's very odd. The car auto re-locks after a set amount of time (you can change the amount of time in the iMid) if no door is opened after you press the unlock button. If you're accidentally hitting the button in your pocket, then you shouldn't find it unlocked ever unless someone happens to enter your car right afterwards.

okiescot, you feel its the key itself doing it?
It's the key fob pressing against something in your pocket that's causing the doors to unlock/lock on their own. Whenever I wash my car, if I have the key fob in my pocket and I bend down or twist in a certain way the fob will press against my leg and lock or unlock all the doors...so I end up setting it on the ground away from the car at that point. If it's in a book bag or purse it can also press against things and lock/unlock the doors. If you hold down the unlock button continuously all of your windows and sunroof will open, too. Nice feature in the summer but it's the reason people come back to their cars in the morning or while at the mall and notice their windows are 20% down.

I actually hang my keys on a hook, they aren't inside of a bag or pocket.
But when you step out of the car, do you put them in a pocket or bag of some sort before you get inside your house and hang them on a hook? If so, my guess is that while they're in your pocket or bag as you're stepping out of the car and walking to your front door, the key fob is pressing against something and unlocking the doors. This happens to me every single time I wash my car and have my key fob in my jeans. Bend, twist, stoop down, reach and the key fob gets pressed and all the doors lock/unlock.

Second that.

When I go from my car to the house, I'm holding the key ring, not the key, so it dangles on my key ring with other stuff sideways, since I left it on the smaller ring - the buttons are not touching anything. Funny, the times I DO put it in a pocket or bag is when I'm at work or the store, etc, I never come back to my car unlocked. It only seems to be at home when it happens, when those buttons are never being touched.

Serious question.

Do you live near any radio towers (broadcast, amateur radio, TV, police, fire) or any radio wave producing equipment in the garage?

Do you have a wireless home alarm system ? you don't need to answer that last one just think about the possibility.

Since it never happens anywhere else other than at home, look in that area for a trigger.

Does your garage door opener use 315Mhz like the key? This could be "jamming" the lock receiver and keep the lock signal from getting to the car. You think you are locking the doors but you aren't. Instead of using the buttons on the key use the physical key lock at home. If it does unlock itself after using the key then it implicates the receiver on the car is getting jammed electronically and causing your problem.

I am not sure what is causing it but TH23 might have hit on the answer. If the car auto locks after a given amount of time and I am still in the vicinity of the car then the fob may unlock the car thinking I want to get back into the car.

When washing the car, I always open and close a door before I begin. This makes sure the car is unlocked and the water will not mess with the touch sensors on the handle. If it's locked and you spray the handle with water, it will unlock, then lock itself back if you don't open a door within 60 seconds.

^ This. The O/M even states that moisture might occasionally throw things for a loop if you happen to be standing with the fob in range; my car has unlocked on "her" own as I've walked up in a driving rain, a good thing as both hands were in a losing battle keeping my umbrella from blowing inside-out! :lmao:

(No, this isn't a smarta$$ "RTFM" post--just passing along the factoid! :) )

@KKMoran

I 100% with you on this. A few weeks ago I went out to my car to go to work and found it unlocked. At 1st I was like ok... I must have hit the fob on my way in the house and unlocked it by accident. Well, its happened almost everyday since. I walk out to my car and its unlocked. I too have been carefully locking it and carry the fob by the key ring. Then I hang it on a hook. I started walking back out to the car with my wife before I go to work and she has seen how its unlocked. I have been trying to time how long it takes for it to unlock with no success. It always seems to happen between midnight, "when I get home from work" and 10am " when I head to work". Im going to start checking it in the middle of the night now. I know its not unlocking due to me handling the fob.
I lock it, hang the key, walk back outside, check the door then walk back inside with out touching the fob. Its always locked. On my way out the door, I walk up to the car find the door unlocked and then walk back to my front door and grab the key off the wall. Im honestly not making any of this up. I now dont keep anything in the car due to it possibly unlocking and someone having a shopping spree in my car. I have no equipment in my garage or house that would mess with the car. So im going to mess with this until after the new year. If it keeps doing it Ill just take it to the dealership. I might also print out the thread to show them that Im not the only one with this potential problem. Sorry for the long post.

Note OP has an LX which has a regular key.
As much as we would love to fault the sensors this isn't the case.

Take it to the dealer and have it checked since it is not user error…
It could be as simple as a faulty printed circuit board, electrical interference or a ghost is haunting your car out of spite.

I have had this happen to me as well a few times. Embarrassing especially when the panic button gets pushed and your neighbors get woke up in the middle of the night.

I rank this along side of butt dialing my supervisor at night when I am at work. He appreciates that very much.

The other thing to check is where the fob is hanging, can you leave it there walk out to your car and open the doors or trunk?

My fob used to hang close enough to open the trunk so it got moved.

Only a long shot but range of these fobs are pretty good. And if you can work something from the fob hanging in the house maybe kids are messing with you?

I also have read that there are tone/frequency generating boxes thieves have developed for fobs that is pretty effective. I doubt this is you as I think the car would have been gone by now.

Let us know what you find out.

Water hitting the handle will the key is in the area will cause this. It's in the manual and I've experienced washing my car.
