2002 Honda Accord. 157,500 miles.

Should I change transmission fluid on a high mileage car? I checked it and it does not smell burnt and it isn't black either. It is a very very dark orange lightish brown color and it looks like I might need to change it soon.

Also a side question on transmission slippage - is it normal for there to be a slight hesitation when the gears switch. It doesn't happen always, but sometimes there is a very slight hesitation and I can feel my car changing gears or is it supposed to be perfectly smooth? Sometime it jerks harder, sometimes I barely notice it changing gears.

Yes change the ATF at least once, two or three changes would be better.
Hesitation between shifts is normal as long as the engine does not rev higher during the shift.

Good post. I wanted to ask the same question.

I'm getting ready to pick up a 02 coupe with 221k miles and last tranny drain/filled was done at 130k miles (Wat the!!!). I hear that sometimes it's better to not change it and may cause tranny to go out faster.

But it shifts very very smooth, no hessitations, no clunking. I didn't get a chance to look at the fluid yet. Once she gets the title, i'm going back to and checking it out one more time and will check. Hopefully in the next day or two.

Sometimes when I put my car from reverse into drive or vice versa there is a clunking sound, sometimes there isn't. The last extreme gear slippage that occured was over 2000 miles ago when my car couldn't handle going up a steep hill and the car was jolting back and forth.

Since then I've been babying it and it hasn't happened again, so was just wondering if I should continue to go through with it.

I did pick up the car and yes, first thing was to drain/fill the fluid. Holly cow, it was pretty dirty, didn't have a burnt smell so that was good news.

Took about 3.7 quarts. So i'm going to drive it for about 1k and do it again.

After draining the fluid, i started the car and shift it into each gear with 10sec delays to get more of the fluids out. Seem like about 1qt more comes out then if i was to just drain it.

So will be doing the same in a few weeks.

Change it! ATF should be changed every ~50K km to keep things good. If it looks brown and smells burnt it is waaay too late.

If you are doing it yourself, its pretty easy just jack up and take out the drain plug bolt (its on as tight as hell though). Some tips:
- old fluid should be hot, drive the car before draining
- Use the honda ATF its the best for the car
- Replace the drain plug washer or that drain pulg is not coming off next time($1.50 part at Honda when you are picking up the fluid)
- Make sure to wipe the drain plug magnet so there are no filings on it
- Dont overfill, dont underfill, seriously its no good.

I have never heard of shifting the gears with no fluid in the car. Is this a good/safe thing to do? Just never heard of it being done this way.

if theres no fluid in it it cant shift and operate. it uses the fluid to cool the clutch discs and to make pressure to operate and push on the clutch discs. i would not reccomend doing such a thing because you will burn the discs up and be [email protected]$*ed

There's still fluid in the car, it's just to help get more out of it.

When you drain it, not all fluid comes out, i dont' even think 1/2 of it comes out? I dont' recall how much it holds, but i'm thinking about 6qts?

So it shouldn't harm it at all. It's not like i drained it, put the bolt in and took it for a spin.

I usually do a single 2.5qt drain and fill once a year, which is about 20k miles for me. Since the 6th gen accords have had a track record of tranny issues, I figure the ~$20 for the fluid and washer is worth it. With ~180k miles on the original tranny, it has so far paid off. The bright red fluid is always the same color coming out that it is going in and I have rarely seen any metal shavings on the drain plug. ymmv. I would recommend changing yours three times and drive ~5miles between changes.

If you get stuck, you will need to do a 3x, or 4x ATF change. Or it WILL DIE soon...

Eveeytime u go to Jiffy Lubr for oil change they recommend trans flush. I took car to trans specialist they say dont flush just add fluids? HELP???

Don't flush.
Just drain out the old ATF and refill.
