i helped a friend replace his catalytic converter, upstream o2 sensor and egr valve. To replace the EGR valve, we took it to my buddys shop and he used some expensive chemical to clean the ports that lead to the egr. He is a certified mechanic that does good work.

Well the cel came back on yesterday

any ideas why it would come back on?

Which EGR code are you now getting? There are several but two common ones are 401 and 1491. The (P0401) is for insufficient flow which means there is still a plugged port somewhere (may require mechanical cleaning) and another code (P1491) for insufficient lift which means the valve is not opening when its supposed to, you may have a wiring problem or the new valve is not working correctly.

Did you reset the PCM and do the re-learn procedure? Your mechanic friend should have done that but I think it needs a drive cycle or two after the re-learn.
