Good Afternoon Everyone!

I drive a Honda Accord 2010 LXP that has 190,000miles. I changed my oil at the end of October and have noticed an excessive oil consumption. The last oil changed I did was in May and changed it after 4000 miles, but now that I changed in October just after month and a half and 2000 miles the dipstick is already below the low level mark. I don’t know what could it be. I have checked if it is leaking but there is no visible leaks and in general the engine bay is clean. I was looking online and something it could be is the PCV valve, but i am not sure that can cause those extreme levels of oil consumption. I would appreciate any help and suggestions.
Merry Christmas

This is not entirely abnormal for this engine, particularly the 08-10 (except some very late model 2010s) models. These engines have low friction piston rings installed that causes this issue. There are several remedies you can try but it sounds like you're burning a quart around every 2k, which is not terrible all things considered. I would just live with it and top the oil up regularly.

If you've never changed the PCV that would be the first, cheapest, least invasive step to take right now.

Since these had the low friction rings as @WiiMaster posted, any pressure exerted by a plugged PCV could enhance and exaggerate oil consumption.

What could it hurt if not help ?

Thank you! I think I will change the PCV valve then.

also, begin to check your oil frequently to better monitor consumption. the K-series engines (accords 2012 and earlier) like to burn oil, especially when older and when driven with low oil level. topping off when it gets down to half a quart will help to mitigate your issue.

as mentioned by other, replace PCV valve first. if that does not work, then other measures can be attempted (seafoam, marvel mystery oil, etc).

Here's what I did with a 2008 Accord LXP (I4, 5AT, ULEV) we purchased with 130,000 miles. Initially, it was using 1 quart of oil about every 2,000-3,000 miles. So, not horrendous but I wanted to reduce the oil consumption.

For the first couple of oil changes I used Mobil 1 5w-20 High Mileage oil which has more detergent than regular oil. In my opinion, the concerns with high mileage oil destroying seals is overblown - it's more likely the seals were on their last legs to start with and the high mileage oil couldn't help any. After that, I switched to Kirkland 0w-20 synthetic oil (not high mileage) which is API SP, ILSAC GF-6A, and Dexos1 Gen3 and also has a great detergent package.

I've also used Seafoam High Mileage in the oil a couple of times, 1 oz per quart of oil (so 5 oz). Instead of using it for only a few hundred miles before the oil change I've used it for 1,000's of miles (they say that's OK). I also use a bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner (1oz/gallon) in the fuel tank every oil change.

We just crossed 201,000 miles (in 3yr 3mo) with it and now the oil consumption is about 1 quart every 7,000 miles.

Change your pcv valve

Did you get a chance during the holidays to change the PCV? Curious to see if you found it to be blocked or not.

I did change the pcv valve this week. I am not sure if it was blocked or not, but I kept it and here is a picture.

This oil consumption thing is relative ... to luck? My 2009 V6 Accord, with 169k miles, never used or uses more than 1/2 qt between 3-4,000 mile changes. I added S-VCM, still 1/2 qt. VCM blew up, removed it, still 1/2 qt. I've used Valvoline since new, switch to a high-mileage brew at 100k. I. have. no. clue.

PCV replaced. 👍

I’d find the lowest Noack rated, full synthetic oil I could find. No semi synthetic or extended performance oil. I’d be stricked in doing on time 5k mile oil changes, as thinning oil tends to travel places it shouldn’t go, primarily burning and blown into exhaust system which will eventually result in an emissions code. I’d also avoid cheap generic economy oil filters. A catch can may help collect oil that has blown past pistons.

My 2008 Accord LX burned an alarming amount of oil. It got so bad that the dipstick would be dry after 2 Fills (about 750 Miles) To me thats pretty bad.
I tried the PCV change but it didnt help. I didnt want to seafoam or any of that, so I traded it in with 200k Mi on it for and got 3500. I think I did ok. It was a fleet vehicle that had a bad smell in the vents I couldnt ever get out.
But yes 08-10 i4 are def oil burners. I cant comment if same engine or redesign on the 11-12 models or if that was only for the V6 models?

My 2012 V6 burns no oil. Not a drop. But I also have had VCM off for 7 years now since purchase. (Thats a different thread all together)

After a week and a half I check the dipstick with a cold engine and this is the oil level. Very concerning.
