During the evening it snowed a little. This am a few cm of snow.

I went to do my catch can duties (every 2 weeks at present) and couldn't open the hood no matter how well I cleared the snow and ice. I guess the cooling engine melted enough snow/ice to run in and eventually freeze it. I pressed down on the hood and could hear the first latch return to position.

Now with the snow off and the sunlight beating down, I plugged in the block heater. We'll see if a couple hours of that will soften it enough to open (but it's -12°C out) ... I also have plastic sticks I can insert o help get some leverage ... otherwise I'll take it a friend's house for some garage time tomorrow. Or maybe just a drive will loosen it up.

Any other suggestions?

Well after 2 hours (sun and block heater) it still wouldn't open. So used a spudger (liner clip tool) to pry it open. Didn't take much force. It was as much the weight of the remaining ice on the hood as the ice in the in-between.

Alloy? Steel? As opposed to aluminum you mean? Or some magical alloy?

About ½ of the schmoo was frozen.
