I'm not looking for the actual GPS, it's probably crap. However, it gives me an idea about mounting a Nexus 7 tablet in a plastic mold similar to the one in the picture (and forget about the lower computer unit).

Has anyone done anything similar to this?

What a helpful comment. Hope the mods are looking. Oh wait.... :D
the idea sounds interesting. but, i would be worried about the increased chance of theft.

As a society we have gone far away from ^

I would be worried about the sun heating the heck out of the unit. I know the Volt's have a storage bin in the same location and if you put a credit card up there it get hot enough to warp it. Good Luck.
i would be worried about night time driving and the glare the tablet will shine back at you while your driving.. i know my 5.5 inch screen on my samsung note 2 is almost too much... and if you Dont use it and night and use a regular gps, then its kind of a "whats the point" then... In all Practicality, i dont need a gps screen that is the size of a Book.. and in alot of states you arent allowed to display videos up front, nor would i want too... Interesting concept.. but "The end does Not justify the Mean" ...
It says in the fine print:

"NOTE

If your car has passenger airbag like the picture, then this unit is not available for you."

Don't all our cars have passenger airbags?

This is what I would like in mine :paranoid: These android phones are cheap enough to do so.

Waze for traffic.
Valentine 1 radar app called YaV1.
Torque app for real time engine specs.

Ive had my tablet permanently installed in my dash since January. It is a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0

I don't know in the long run if it the sun can damage it but i've had mounted on top of the radio since January and it hasn't given me any problems. I live in Florida so temperatures get pretty high down here. The only thing the tablet has done is show a message saying "Charging Has Been Paused Due to High Battery Temperature". That's after a really long day in the August Florida sun, After a minute or two with the AC on, the tablet cools down and its starts charging again.

You can adjust the screen brightness on the tablet to the point where it doesn't bother you at all. The car gauges can bother you more than the tablet itself. There is even an app called Tasker that allows you to program the tablet to do this by itself after a certain time or even automatically by detecting how sunny or dark it is.
If you display videos up front while you are driving then you are just an irresponsible idiot. It is illegal in Florida at least and it should never be done. But it can fun to just google youtube videos when you are waiting for your girlfriend to come out of the mall from buying shoes and underwear.

what would the tablet do while its up there?
Like 2006accord4 said, you can use it for Waze, to detect cops which i have found to be more accurate than my Radar detector for cops, even for dangerous objects on the road. Waze has saved me twice from hitting a piece of truck tire on two of my drives back and forth from college.

You can also buy one of these:

with the Torque app and you will have live information about the status of your car. It will even tell you with a nice feminine voice when your engine has reached operating temperature. It will warn you when you accelerate too hard with a cold engine by saying "Caution, engine is NOT at operating temperature". As well as warning you when the CEL comes on, and reading the code out loud without having to press a button along many other things....Oh and it is fully customizable.
Looks something like this:

Now, regarding the OP, if only they sold the top plastic part without the screens and electronics for a reasonable price i would be all over it. I am happy with my setup but i would love to give it a more OEM look.

There is a don't ask, don't tell policy in effect.

Actually, they have a voice command setting. Post police location via voice command.

Like this:

You can either have your co pilot input the data for you, and if you dont have one just wave your hand in front of the tablet say the command and you can do it by voice.

I'm sorry, but that just looks awful. You could have at least fabricated something.
