Hi all,

Below I attached a link to a cold start of my 2.0 18 Accord.

Recently, I heard a sort of fan sound but it sounds like a metal on metal sound, I couldn't find a way to describe the sound to the dealership, I thought it was just a cold start noise but now when I accelerate up to 1800 - 2000 rpms,I can hear the same sound coming through my engine even on 1 hour plus drives when the engine is all nice and warm.

The sound is more pronounced at the 11 second mark and on..

I haven't heard my car do this before, I have a feeling it has something to do with the turbo or my waste gate actuator? Would any one of those failing or soon to fail fire up an engine check on my dash or any kind of indication?

Also, I apologize for the terrible recording, I was trying to get my phone mic in where I thought the noise was coming from, if you want more videos on a different angle, I will definitely do that.

Thanks in advance!

I had the same sound but it was coming from the fan. Sounded like metal clanking. At first I only heard it a few times during cold start but after months it got more noticeable and it was there all the time. This was on my 2013 V6 Accord which I bought on October 2012 and around February 2013 the sound was bothering me as I thought it was an engine issue. The one day I opened the hood I notice that the sound wasnt there then the fan kicked and there was the sound that was driving me nuts. I took the car to the dealer several times but they didnt do nothing about it. Well it's been 7 years and 5 months and the fan is still running. It you want to check to see if it's the fan try disconnecting.

Good luck

Hey man, first thanks for your response.

I noticed that this sound comes at 2 thousand RPMs so I tried revving my engine while Parked but it doesn't do that sound, it's only when the car is in motion and I'm driving.. do you think it's the fan?? Which fan would it be? Also, I will link a video where I remote started my car in my garage which is relatively warm but the cold starts are so loud, please let me know what you think (pls don't mind all the mess in the garage, we moved into the house a while ago lol).

Regards

Mike.

To me, it sounds like a pulley bearing, hopefully it's something not that major.
Hey Scooby,

Thanks for the reply man.

I had this issue start on a very cold day, about -36 degrees Celsius and I have the sound on video..Please check it out here..

Around the 7 second mark you can hear something go out.. And ever since that day, my cold starts have been sounding like this ^^^

What should I say to my dealership? Should I show them some cold start videos? Should I mention maybe its a pulley bearing gone bad?

Thanks in advance

If you can loosen the tension on the serpentine belt, you can check for any looseness or play in the various pulleys - not just the tensioner pulley and idler pulley, but also the pulleys on the various driven "accessories". It's always hard to tell where engine compartment sounds are coming from, but maybe you can tell if the noise seems to come from the serpentine belt area.....

Someone else mentioned the electric fans behind the radiator. I wouldn't think these would be running at cold start. They are thermostatically-controlled, and should only run when the coolant is hot. However, perhaps they are forced on whenever the AC is running? You might also try turning off the climate control totally, to see if that affects the noise (or at least ensures that the fans aren't running).

Sometimes AC compressor clutches can make noise. I forget if our Accords use a traditional AC clutch on the compressor (that turns the compressor on and off), or if they use the newer type of "variable displacement" compressor, that is basically always on....

You are welcome mate. I did listen and I reckon it's the engine’s belt being loose, or the tensioner being damaged somehow. We are closing in and pointing the finger to the front of the engine. Your options here are to; first, check the engine's belt. Second, check the tensioner. Third, check the pulleys.

All best,

All best,
Hey Scooby,

I left my Accord on sunday at the dealership to let it stay overnight so they can diagnose it on a cold start Monday morning..

They left t with them all day only to tell me:

"TECH STARTED VEHICLE FORM PARKING LOT TO TRY AND DUPLICATE NOISE CONCERN. STARTED IN THE MORNING BUT WAS UNABLE TO HEAR ANY ABNORMAL NOISE. STARTED AGAIN IN THE AFTER NOON BUT WAS UNABLE TO HEAR NOISE CONCERN. CUSTOMER PROVIDED VIDEO. TECH CHECKED VIDEO AND NOISE SOUNDS LIKE THE DIRECT INJECTOR, IT IS NORMAL FOR THIS TYPE OF NOISE DUE TO THE HIGH PRESSURE FROM THE INJECTOR SPECIALLY DURING COLD WEATHER. NO PROBLEMS FOUND AT THIS TIME"

Of all my years of going to dealerships, they seem to never ever be able to "replicate" customers concern on their car.

I am not a car guy so I don't know how to do what you suggested :(..
