This looks like a bad idea, but maybe I'm wrong. Not sure they would last too long since they turn on and off frequently.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't hids need time to warm up, how long do you have your back up lights on 10-25 secs the most.

You are probably better off getting some LED's for the reverse lights. That's what I have in my Accord, and they work fantastic. No delay or flickering at all.
