There was a study done for various platforms sharing customer information and auto manufacturers were near the bottom of customer privacy

I just peeped at that article and I'm now shutting off my driver alerts. My insurance just went up this renewal period and I noticed that no matter how softly I brake it would always give me 1 star and tell me there were hard brakes on my trip. It never dawned on me that they might be sharing this info outside of Honda. Should've known better. I had meant to turn it off a long time ago but kept forgetting. Glad I saw this cuz that's bullshit.

Mozilla Organization, (as in Firefox browser) did a study that I posted about here which ranked car companies at/near the bottom for data collection and bad privacy habits...

You could try the Plug In Your VIN app which is supposed to tell you what info your car has and is sharing, and it's supposed to be able to delete the info.

Higher insurance rates? Allstate will raise rates up to 40% this year because the CEO states that they need to be more profitable. Yes, they’re raising rates just because they can. Other insurance companies are raising their rates as well, but Allstate will have the biggest increase. Get used to it guys.

I'd be skeptical, unless it has some magic power to uncover all of HondaLinks business relationships and search and edit paid subscription sites and where the data ends up after that.

Sadly this is unavoidable and just the tip of the iceberg. It's a big business.

I worked for LexisNexis for 3 years. Our group was allowed to look ourselves up on all 100+ products they offer.

You would be astounded at what is known about you. And these two companies are not the only players.

Every time I start my Touring, I get a message about Data Sharing. What are the consequences of just turning it off? Does it affect any other functions?
According to Honda Link: Data sharing is communications between vehicle and Honda Link. It can only be turned on/off within the vehicle by the following: On touchscreen, HOME, GENERAL SETTINGS, PRIVACY; DATA SHARING; ENABLE or DISBALE

Thanks - I printed this, out and will go turn it off on my car immediately.

This is a very helpful post.

Honda will always track your vehicle. But that's it. "Data sharing" is much more nebulous. As discussed here, data can be collected from many different sources, in car sensors as used by OBD, geolocation, your phone and more and for that reason can contain PID. "Sharing" could be with anyone/everyone because things that are shared tend to be shared again. In this context shared could equal sold, in raw or in aggregate form without PID.

Honda and HondaLink are different entities.

Do you pay for any of the HondaLink services such as roadside assistance or remote start?

It's creating a "driving score" so it certainly is sharing your data, possibly even with your own insurance company. So the next time you renew and have a low(er) score...watch out!

IMO, turn it off if you don't want/need big brother peering at your speedo, etc...

That's in DRIVER FEEDBACK not DATA SHARING, correct? At least that's what app shows.

How is it judging your performance unless it's communicating somewhere else? And just because they call it "driver feedback" doesn't mean it's not "data sharing", and sending the same info elsewhere so they can offer you cheaper insurance. It can't just be making these deals up.

Sounds like they're just playing semantics games, to me...

Did you look at the DRIVER FEEDBACK screenshot I provided. At bottom it states info for insurance discounts. So if you have DRIVER FEEDBACK enabled, it appears it is communicating to some cyber source (sharing the info) with the information it gathers.

DATA SHARING does not provide info to external source if info they provide is correct, it only communicates between car and app. If you are leery, that can be turned off.
