I went to my Honda dealer to get an oil filter as I do my own oil changes. The parts guy looked up the 15400 PLM A01 and said Honda discontinued it and they don't sell it anymore. So he gave me the A02 filter. I've read on this forum that the A01 was a better filter than the A02. Do you guys recommend skipping the A02 and trying to buy an A01 off the internet?

The A01 is hard to source nowadays. I don't think it's worth going out of your way to buy it. People consider it a 'better' filter than the A02 due its metal end caps and a few other differences. But the fact of the matter is that the A02 will serve you just fine. Honda has enough faith in it to install it right from the factory on their new cars. Plenty of pics of cut opened spent A02s online and they look good.

FWIW, I don't even bother with the A02 -- which is a re-badged Fram Toughguard. I just get the Fram from Walmart for cheaper than the dealer. I hate going to the parts counter at the dealer because you get hounded by multiple salesmen during the process.

Someday there will be an episode of Hoarders where the brave filming crew finds 500 decomposing A01 filters lying on top of a stove in the garage with a leaky roof and squirrels and such living about.

"But you haven't started your Civic in 22 years- it's been sitting there crushed by that tree."

I've sought the A01 and purchased it if they have it- but won't go "out of my way" to get it over the A02.

Check oil level regularly, use a good quality oil, and change it when you should.

I get my A01 filters on Ebay a few at a time for $7-8 a piece. It's all i've ever used.

Damn, I should have waited a day longer to change my oil.

Searched a lot for A01 but found it only on college hills Honda. 7 a piece, plus shipping.

I took my own oil to the dealer and he installed an A02 filter. Would they void the warranty if I used a Fram Ultra or Fram Toughguard instead?

I don't think they will void your warranty from using a non OEM oil filter as long as it meet or above Honda's specs. I'm currently running an FU with PU 5w-20. No knocking or start up rattle.

You can still get the A01 on Amazon, Ebay, HandA, and if lucky from your local dealer.

OP: You are fine using the A02, it's a solid filter depending on your OCI.
