Car:
2017 Accord V6 with 6 Speed Auto
Mileage: ~61,500

I've had my car for about 6 years now and I've only thought to ask this now.

Is it normal for shifts to be be jerky between gear 1 and 2 (under 25 mph). Car does fine while cruising at higher speeds but it's quite annoying to drive in traffic. It's still a bit of a challenge, after all these years ,gauging where the car will stop when cruising to a red light because of the aggressive downshifting. I've driven a F150 and an Explorer and shifts in those were smooth. I've never seen anyone mention this, but it would be a pretty big characteristic of the driving characteristics.

When's the last time you changed trans fluid?

My wife hated this about our 2014 EXL V6. It is much worse in Sport mode. I felt like it got a little better over time on normal mode, and I am used to it now. Agree it also could be old tranny fluid

I recently traded in my 2017 EX-L V6 with close to 178,000 miles. The jerkiness only got worse as mileage increased. At highway speeds, it was fine. The worst was when shifting from reverse into drive, the car would sometimes lurch forward pretty quickly. I changed the fluid anytime it came up on the maintenance minder. I also found out from the dealership after trading it that upon their inspection, they discovered a slight leak from the rear seal. Nothing major, but it was just getting started, they said.

I think this is normal, when i first purchased my car in 2013 I realized the downshifting in the V6 model was quite hard in gears 1 and 2, isn't this related to engine braking?
It definitely helps with slowing down lol. To the point where you're often stopping short.

Mine does that too. Always makes me think that i didn't have my foot on the brake when shifting 😬. I think it happens on cold starts.

Just changed it at 60K Miles. Shifting did get smoother but now it's back to how it was when new 😂
60k is a long time on this fluid. It should be changed at least every 30k.

Hi SimpleChinaman - Completely normal. Feels like driving a manual with heavy engine breaking. I got used to it and don't have to use my brakes much. Always wondered why bunch of people here say the v6 is buttery smooth.

I think the V6 ENGINE is nice and smooth, but yes the transmission is somewhat herky jerky on our 2014 Accord, but like you said, have gotten used to it. It is also worse when the car is cold on winter mornings.
