So my keyless stopped working and I bought a replacement battery from a website. Is the memory in the transmitter volatile? Do I need to reprogram after the replacement? Also this sounds stupid but which way should the battery face because I see contacts on both sides of the housing.

No you do not need any reprogram, just put the new battery in.

As for polarity, look carefully on the battery and also the key housing, there should be clear indication of "+" and "-" to guide you to the correct orientation.

ust put the new battery in the same way the old one came out.
