I've just learned the oil pump on my 2004 Accord Coupe v6 (58K miles) needs to be replaced. I had my oil changed on 5/5/08 at a dealer then took a 900 mile trip, My oil pressure light came on 5/12 and started flashing. I pulled off. Plenty of oil. Started car and light was no longer on. I drove about 6 miles. Stopped car. When I restarted it the light came on again. I left the car and had it towed. The dealer I had it towed to said there were some metal shavings in the oil pan. Priced a new oil pump, a used engine and a new engine. Both dealers said this is not a problem they have ever seen with this particular car and are puzzled as to what would cause the ol pump to fail. There are no recalls on this. It is not under warranty. I'm going with the new oil pump vs. replacing the engine. Anybody ever heard of this and have any advice for me? Thanks.

That's not exactly high mileage either.......

You may want to approach American Honda Co. to see if there would be any good well gesture, as well they might be very interested in finding out exactly what had gone wrong with the the oil pump, if that is in fact the problem, or could it be something else within the engine wearing out prematurely as the oil pump should last the lifetime of the engine without replacement.

One huge advantage going for you is that your Honda dealership changed the oil only 11 days ago, so no one can blame you or an independent shop that the oil change wasn't done right by "an authorized Honda dealer"!

Hope they didn't use the gun to fill your car and use too thick of an oil. I wouldn't think so since most Honda's use a 20w or 30w.

Some info...

Did you buy the car new?

How often do you have the oil changed?

If you bought the car used, did it come with any service records (showing consistent oil change intervals).

If the motor runs fine with just a new oil pump you'll be in luck. Lets hope for that. :paranoid:

After looking at the diagram of the oil pump on the J30 V6 I can see that the pump is mounted on the front of the motor and is crank driven (#2) with some kind of electric sensor control #16. So what part actually broke?

The pump pickup (#5) could be clogged due to sludge, the pump pickup O-ring (#25) could be leaking if the pickup came loose or on of the electric sensors failed. Ask the dealer what really happened or let me talk to them and find out.

I have never seen a mechanical oil pump fail before. As some have said, contact Honda, something seems fishy here.

I agree with the others. This is a very uncommon problem and I would adress this with Honda.

Although we all say "Honda should be sooo reliable," NO CAR ENGINE should do this with today's technology.

Best of luck. Let us know how it goes, but I would not do a thing to the car until Honda of America get's ahold of the case.

A new one for me.... the oil pumps aren't prone to failure at all!

I'd get a second opinion.
