radio still not working after typing in code

I got the radio code from the dealer. I disconnected, and then reconnected the battery. I typed in the code but nothing happened. I was told by another dealer that the radio has to match the computer and that the radio may have been changed. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

It is still says COdE after you put the code in then you don't have the correct code.

How did they find the code? By the VIN or by the radio serial number?

What car?

I gave the dealer the SN off the radio and it matched the card that came with the car.

It's a '97 4dr 4cyl EX.

I was given the impression I would have to change the computer.
I've never heard of the computer being related to the radio.

Just to make sure, did you power on the radio before entering the code?

Ya know, that's a good question.
I assumed that because "code" was lighted up in the display, that it was on.

How do I know if the radio is on? "code" is displayed on the screen and there is a red light on as well. The volume/power knob is missing so all I have is the metal shaft. I tried turning the shaft and it doesn't seem to make a distinct click to let me know if it's on or off.
I'm certain I have the right code. Is it possible that the radio is just shot?
If you haven't resolved this issue already. Why not just buy an aftermarket radio. You can probably get much improved sound for around 100 - $150.
