This is my first post so please forgive me if I breach any etiquette.

I have an '03 4 cylinder Accord and there is some whining coming from the AC compressor. Sounds like a bearing is going bad. I'm sure someone has had this problem before. The shop is quoting me $700 for the pack/Bearings and $900 for the whole compressor. How hard is it to replace the clutch pack/bearings in this unit? I'm fairly handy around cars and have turned a few wrenches. Any help would be appreciated.

The cost of the clutch/pulley setup is almost as much as an entire compressor.

If you only hear the whine when the compressor is engaged, it's not the pulley bearing, it's the inside of the compressor, not uncommon.

If its grinding all the time, pull the belt and spin it, if its noisy, it's bad.

It's your call as to how much you want to spend.

You will have to pull the compressor and move it enough to get the retaining nut off the clutch and then the snap ring that holds the pulley to the compressor body.

If you're going that far, replace the clutch coil, they seem to have some issues.
