My review of the ScanGage-2...
I'll write more as I have time, back to work, for now...
Update# 2b…
I have a ScanGage-2 and I thought I'd share my experiences...
My Short answerer: I like it, mostly; I wish it was more accurate...
And now the long answerer:
I got the SG2 because, I wanted trip computer, and my car did have one. And, I am having a somewhat regular, no engine light type, error codes P0700 (MIL request) and P1739 (3rd gear pressure switch, error. See note below. *1), that shows up every 1-2 months, and I wanted to know when, and under what conditions…
SG2, As Trip computer:
Probably as accurate as any OEM Trip Computer. Not as accurate as I'd like. It usually off by 1 MPG, or less. I want less than 0.1 MPG's. It’s somewhat calibratable, for gallons used, and speed. Speed is only calibratable to one percent (0.5 MPH at 50 MPH). There no offset adjustment (like if off by 0.5 MPH at all speeds).
My car's computer is off by, less than, 0.5 MPH (I cant tell since SG2’s Speed is in 1 MPH (Vs GPS, is available in 0.1-MPH) and the cars spedo is off by almost 3 MPH (GPS=65 MPH, Honda Spedo=68 MPH, and the Honda Computer (via SG2)=65 MPH). Miles are off by about one mile or so, out of almost 200 miles (my full up cycle).
SG2, Error code scanning:
I figured it would at least scan at ever time it (the engine) was turned on. Or at some interval. Nope. I have to do this each time I start the car, manually – D’oh!!!
Unexpected fuel economy findings.
Vary slow starts, are not all that fuel saving. Nor are WOT (Wide Open Throttle) starts. I get 7.5 MPG at WOT. Starting out from a slow speed or from a stop, is what takes the majority of the fuel used (Poor MPG).
When I start slowly, the Fuel economy starts at 3, 6, 9, 12, 14 MPG (updates once a second); It’s never higher than 18 MPG, till up to speed), etc – These are approximate values, for example. Once I'm up to the speed I intended; Once there, I get 25-35 MPG depending on the speed.
If instead, I speed up more quickly, I spend less time at the lower MPG's rate.
It seems like it’s a bell shape curve. With bad MPG/ FE at either ends, middle ground being the best MPG’s/ FE. Slow starts, prolong the pain. …
I am no, hyper-miler.
I like the sound of my engine, at WOT; I like mountain roads, I prefer 70 over 55 MPH. I find driving boring during the commute, and I find some times I need a little distraction, like trying to get better fuel economy. I get around 29-30 MPG during my commute (30% city/ 70% Highway), assuming I take the 55/65 MPH rout, Vs the 40 MPH, mountain pass rout (26-28 MPG). I have seen as high as, 31.5 and as low as 25 MPG…
Other findings. When the SG2, shuts off, the LED’s flash or flicker brightly, and I find this annoying…
*1) I have a Honda Remanufactured Trany. The dealership’s service manager said, that, “It not a problem until the engine light (MIL) is on.” According to the factory manual, the code P1739, can never though a MIL by its self? But will permanently store this error code, till the codes are cleared. Normally mon-MIL codes clear them self, eventually...
