Okay, I figured it was time to get my car's thread out of the introduction board so people will actually see my updates, haha. If a mod or admin wants to move this to a more appropriate board that's fine; I thought because it's a 6th gen it would get the most views in the 6th gen board.

Anyway, I'll start with photos of the process of my dad and I plasti-dipping the entire car, from OEM Flamenco Black Pearl with sun damage and chipping/a replacement hood that was green to graphite black pearl over gunmetal gray plasti-dip. It's not perfect but I think it looks a lot better than when I got it. The photos and text below are re-posted from my intro thread but I wanted to get them in here as well. I'll be posting updates on Selene in this thread from now on.

Taping off, base coat, grey and top coat with pearl:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So as you can see, dad and I (mostly dad) got Selene dipped over the weekend. The finish came out a bit textured, especially on the roof, and I believe that was a combination of the sprayer not being quite powerful enough and/or my dad's never painted with plasti-dip before, haha. He was spraying a little too far away where he had a hard time reaching on the roof and center/top of the hood. I don't care about that though, I think it looks awesome! I kept the bottom trim and front Honda logo original (I taped off the whole front emblem). The rear 'H' came right off, and I have to peel the dip off the Accord emblem because I didn't want to risk breaking it trying to take it off. I stuck it back on there a few weeks ago with metal/glass adhesive and it would have been a battle trying to get it off. I have to put the LX emblem on as well, but I'm probably gonna try badge glue on that, or E6000.

Prep:

We taped it off and wiped it down very, very thoroughly with denatured alcohol before painting. My dad's first job was taping off cars to be painted, actually, haha. Before that we did body work: filled a rust hole in the left rear wheel well facing the door and primed it, you can't tell there was ever a hole there now. Filled in gouges on the hood and bumper from a truck backing into it; couldn't get it all but it looks a hell of a lot better. Filled in some little rust holes on the hood as well. I sanded the clear coat that was chipping down/off where I could with a little motorized disc sander. Hand-sanded the sun damage under the passenger side windows, rust on the rear passenger door and a little round rust spot on the driver door. That came right off, it was only surface rust left from [apparently] a magnet that was left on the car.

Plasti-Dip:

We used two gallons of black, one gallon of gunmetal gray, and two gallons of top coat: one gallon of clear that had 25g of hyper black graphite pearl mixed in and the other by itself. We didn't use all of the paint. We put on three tack coats of black, two wet, two or three wet coats of gray, one tack coat of clear and then the rest of that gallon and about half a gallon of the other clear. The wet coats used about a quarter to a third of a gallon each so I think we got the ratio down. I would have liked to get more coats on but dad has a bad shoulder and he could only take so much painting.

Anyway, since the hood and roof came out textured, I might go back up to my parent's place this weekend and try giving it a gentle misting in naptha with the spray gun and see if that evens out the texture. We had xylene to clean the paint gun and mixing stuff, but I knew they stopped recommending xylene to thin dip with.

The hood was my fault. I tried taking a swing at painting and I royally effed it up, haha. But dad fixed it as best he could. You can barely tell by looking at it in person that there's a bit of striping near the top. The photo I took doesn't have great lighting and from the angle it's at you can totally see it. Maybe this weekend I'll go up and practice with the gun so I can do it myself next time, or we can take turns. I stayed in the garage and mixed up the paint and was on air hose patrol while he was walking around the car painting. Dad couldn't believe the color actually came out "looking like the pictures" I showed him back when I was still contemplating it. The color was almost exactly what I pictured in my mind. I wish it was more glossy but we could always add more later. I'd have to fix the texture first.

I took this photo right after putting some Dip Coat Protective Spray on her. I actually applied it with paper towels so we didn't do too terribly with the texture. It only grabbed the paper on the hood and roof a little. Otherwise it went on pretty smooth. If I had a microfiber towel I probably would have had less trouble.

Thanks man, I really appreciate that. Your car looks like it was very well taken care of. I don't think I could ever lose Selene. When she eventually dies, as all things do, I might just get another 6th gen and she can live on through that one.

I reeeaaallly wish the sedan had the solid grille piece like the coupe has.

Anyway, I have a few photos to share from the car wash yesterday.
Got a short review on some Blou products here. Ordered from KP Pigments.

I got the wheel & tire cleaner, stain remover and dip mist.

Wheel & tire cleaner: I liked this stuff, you can see it working and my wheels are definitely cleaner than before. My wheels are not dipped but my car is, so anything that's dip safe is cool with me. It smells a little funny though. I applied two coats of it because my wheels were not clean at all.

Stain remover: I tried this specifically because there are a couple stains on my hood from bird poop, that I haven't been able to remove with anything else so far. I sprayed a little on a microfiber and some over the stained area and gently rubbed at it, but it did nothing. A little disappointed from that. It took some little bug stains off the bumper but they would have wiped off anyway.

Dip mist: I think this shined up the car, which is done in AirWrap and Protek, a little better than the Lucas Slick Mist I've been using since day 1. It goes on a little more thin and streaks easier, but a gentle wipe with a microfiber evens any streaks out easily. Plus it smelled nice and didn't leave any residue on my hands.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase, even though the main thing I wanted - the stain remover - didn't really do what I wanted it to do.

Then some shots of the new SilverStar Ultras:

Yeah, once I got the new bumper and I noticed it didn't have front plate holes drilled in the spot where you put one (though I'm still not a fan of that big rectangle breaking up the flow of the curve), I decided to not put anything there and leave it as-is. I only had that front plate on before to cover up the shoddy drill job, probably done by the dealership, that was there, lol.

Selene is getting "the works" at the car wash today. I just received the Blou car care product package that I ordered, which contains wheel/tire cleaner, stain remover and dip mist; all dip-friendly of course. There are some bird poop stains on the hood that I want to try and get rid of. This brand was recommended to me by my fellow dippers as the top product to remove stains. We shall see.

Something weird happened this morning. I was on the highway, about a mile out, and I looked down and noticed the temperature gauge was still at cold. Then as if she suddenly noticed I was looking, the needle jumped right up to normal operating temperature. I think I've noticed this happen once before, in the winter. What's up with that? Could the thermostat be getting stuck?
Mine does that too sometimes, I have to thump the dash and it will go up. Not sure it it's the cluster, sensor cable etc. I dont think its the thermostat. Another poster had this same issue with 6th gen accord.
hmm. Well if you can bang on the dash and it goes up, it might be a loose connection somewhere. I haven't tried or had to do that just yet, haha.
Never bothered with taking the cluster out, wonder how much work is that to see if it's a loose connection.
Such a great thread. Just read through all 14 pages.

I'm missing my old '98 Accord so bad now. Don't get me wrong, my '12 is awesome, but my '98 was the best car I've ever owned.

I have a 98 4cyl DX, 5 spd Manual(no transmission worries). Has 230K run's like a champ. Burns little oil but hey that expected with that mileage and age. Your's looks great, should have kept that. oh well

This white 7th gen was parked next to me today. I actually talked to the owner as he was heading to his car as I was wiping some water stains off mine. We talked for a bit. It was nice talking to another Honda enthusiast :)

Enne, I know it's significantly more expensive, but do you think you'll ever pull the wrap off and do a bare-metal re-spray? Mine was black currant pearl, and it was a gorgeous shade of black. Reminded me of Knight Rider, when Michael first sees KITT- super-deep black. When I got rid of my '98, the clear coat was failing, but if I had kept it, I definitely would have had it repainted.

(Don't get me wrong: I think it looks cool as it is, but just curious)
At this point I could just buy a 6th gen without paint damage if I wanted one with real paint. I like the idea of being able to change Selene's color whenever I want for about 1/12 of the price of a full repaint.

So I probably won't ever get her repainted. If someone offered it to me I wouldn't say no, as she could use it to even out the finish, but I like her the way she is just fine.

Selene has an appointment at the shop on Friday to get her A/C and suspension checked out. A/C should be colder than it is now, and yesterday as I was driving through town I decided to turn my music off and play a game of "let's get paranoid about any sound you hear coming from the car, because you're going on a trip next week". I heard and tested a definite "clunk" or "thump" coming from the front driver's side area when hitting a rough patch of road. Kind of a loose, light clunking, like something isn't tightened down all the way. I told them I just replaced the sway bar links on the front about a year ago so I didn't think it was that, but that's kinda what it sounds like. They'll test it out for me and find it. As long as they don't call me and tell me it needs new ball joints I won't really mind paying for anything they find. It's not affecting the handling at all.

This is the shop that inspected Selene last November, and they replaced the thermostat and rad cap on the Explorer last summer in like an hour while I waited, so I trust them. They yelled at me for the drum brakes during inspection (lol they didn't actually yell at me of course) on Selene but they let me go with a warning and a promise that I'd get them replaced soon. But that was a sign that they cared and weren't just trying to push parts and service on me.

Oh, and I got a notice that her registration is up in October. Time to apply for vanity plates ;) SELENE is taken already in PA (bummer), so I'll have to think of something else. I might just get an organization special plate instead.

I had a low speed clunk over bumps on my passenger side earlier this summer. It turned out to be my upper control arm ball joint. I am curious to see if you have the same issue. I ended up going with a Moog upper control arm from Rock Auto.
A/C was a pound low, and the sway bar bushings were shot just like I predicted to the service writer. The A/C is recharged and I'm having the bushings replaced. Woo!

Just got back from the shore yesterday; A/C is still ice cold and no more clunkies.

I am mulling over emailing my fellow dippers over at DipOne Coatings and having them do Selene over in Tahitian Green pearl...I'm wondering how much they'd charge just to do some pearl coats in clear over the AirWrap I have down already...
I think she would look marvelous is Vibrant Blue Pearl ( a Fit color from 2008) When the time comes for new struts I heartily recommend Koni Yellows, even for stock ride height they are fantastic, and you can tune them to your liking for stiffness. That happy "hour" is four hours long!
Plastidip normally looks terrible but wow, nice work.

In my opinion, which means nothing, it's time to dump both of these project cars and find one that is worth your time & money. You are burying yourself in these projects, Dad's help or not. Time to move on. Use your brain, you have a good one gal.

It's actually a product called AirWrap, it's very different from Plasti Dip. Has a satin finish straight outta the gun and it isn't rubbery to the touch, haha.

Selene isn't really a project car anymore; she's running well and all I've been putting into her lately are cosmetics and little routine maintenance things. 16 year old bushings are gonna wear out eventually. And I dipped her so I could change the color whenever I wanted, so I don't mind doing just that. I've been running with the black for a few months and I think I'd like to try a pearl color now.

And, once I get the transmission looked at in Harlock, and if I don't feel like continuing with it, my dad will give me his Z28. Which has a lot more potential.

...And it runs.

I'm one of those people who finds purpose in life by having something to take care of; even more so if it's something that was broken before and I made it better (no, I'm not talking about men lol). It's usually a pet but since we can't have pets where we currently live, it's been cars since I got this job and had the money/low rent and bills to do so. It's fun for me. I can't afford a brand new car and insurance, so I'd rather wrench on some older cars with no loans looming over my head and be free to do whatever I want with it.

Hey, you were right! The thermostat dropped suddenly, around the same time it always does when it decides to, and I gave the dash right above the thermostat a good thump with a closed fist, and it sprung right back up where it should have been. Guess I gotta check that out sometime.
