so yesterday i was going about 55 on a street, it was the speed limit, and i was driving i did not see a gray pigeon standing in the street not looking my way, i saw it as it started to take off from the ground. it didn't get that high after i nailed it with the lower part of the windshield, and it hit it and flew and all i saw was feathers in my rear view mirror falling from the sky, i felt bad, no damage to car just white and gray dirt or dust on the window, washed it off. all good now though.

lol Damn....Glad to know the windsheild can withstand such a blow, but hows the bird?:lmao:

the bird i think exploded over the top of the car

A pigeon is nothing for a steeply raked windshield. They're NOT tough at all anymore man; they're much thinner than years ago, and all it takes is a small rock to crack it. You can hit a vulture taking off and nothing would happen to it either. The problem is when the object hits the windshield at a perpendicular angle, like a stone kicked up by a car ahead. A bird is taking off at almost the same angle as the windshield, plus it's soft and large (compared to a pebble) so the resultant impact is little. Take care.

resultant??

resulting*

i wouldn't say its a strong windshield, but rather you got lucky the pigeon didnt hit the windows weak spots which could be anywhere, a slight hit will crack the whole thing. any class has a weak spot. but glad nothing happened

:lmao:

Dude I had a regular size bird hit my 98 civic coming back from a weddding the day after and man was it windy...doing about 70 or so and the wind was kicking, the darn bird didn't have a chance. The wind literally took the bird and smack right into the windshield of my car. No damage to my ride but I have no clue what happened to the bird.

On a side note today while out Xmas shopping my d@mn windshield and side windows would fog up randomly. Maybe it was the different parts of PA I was driving in but still it was a PITA to deal with.

D@mn... what a horrible story!?! Glad to hear that you weren't overwhelmed by the sensory-input of a "exploded" pigeon, resulting in a dangerous maneuver which could've potentially made the situation worse!

Many deem the urban pigeon to be nothin' more than "flying rats", but these birds have a lot of character & candor. . .

I had a rock hit my windshield and it made my ears ring yet no damage was done to the windshield

I'm just glad it didn't damage the windshield

Just give you windshield about 20,000 miles or so and then drive into the sun...You will see thousands of pits...not very strong...

i know i probably already got 5 pits.

I've never seen a windshield crack because of a bird strike...

But I know grills usually hold up to the punishment - my old Tacoma grill met the face end of a yellow finch. It was quite colorful :D

I just got a crack in my windshield from a rock (at 60 mph). It grew to about 3 inches within the next 10 miles. Next trip, it went to around 6 inches.

The rock didn't sound very large. The contact point was an inch or so in from the right-side A-pillar. If the glass is stressed at the location the rock hits, you'll get a crack.

Does anyone know if I should be insisting on OEM windshield for a replacement? Do non-OEM windshields have the same shading and dot patterns (in the area around the auto-dimming mirror mount and wires)?

Just tell the glass place ahead of time to make sure the sunshade strip and dot-matrix pattern are identical, this way they can't plea ignorance afterwards.
