Thank you Honda for giving my Accord a servicable transmission filter!

Thank you Honda for giving my Accord a timing chain instead of a belt!

Thank you Honda for limiting my time at my local Honda dealership to the parts department!

I don't forsee anybody servicing my Honda (except me) for a looong time!!

Let's see....what do I have to thank Honda for....

Thanks Honda for not crumpling to bits after hitting a median (head first, 40-50 mph)

Can't exactly thank Honda for all that other stuff under the hood (no idea what's going on under there)-but it's still working

I do forsee someone else servicing my Honda (that's what guys are for)

I don't know why people get so uppity about whether a car has a timing chain or belt (unless they want to change the cam timing often). They both have their pro's and con's, one isn't better than the other. I've seen some posts where people think they were "jipped" because they got a belt instead of chain. I think those people don't understand how the timing system works, because if they did, they wouldn't care. For you timing belt worry worts here's a little blip that should put your mind to ease:

There are many more advantages to a belt-drive system than ease of use. A belt drive can increase power over a timing chain through less frictional loss, more precise timing, smoother valvetrain motion and eliminating windage caused by the timing chain and gears running in oil. A belt drive also isolates the crankshaft's torsional vibrations from the camshaft better than a chain (and certainly better than gear drives, which can amplify crank harmonics). Think of it as a second harmonic damper for the rotating assembly.

Didn't mean to sound "uppity". Just glad it's not something pressing on me in the near future. I figure the chain drive should be good for atleast 150K. I hope the water pump lasts that long. :paranoid:

No, wasn't saying you're uppity, just some people who have belt driven rather than chain driven timing systems seem to feel as though they got an inferior setup. Not only is a belt system not inferior at all, I prefer it to the chain system for the reasons cited.

You should probably replace the water pump at 120k miles when the first coolant service is due. And every 90k miles after that.

There's no reason why your car's engine can't run for 500k + miles with all services done on time. - It's been done before!

The reason why I get all 'up' about the timing chain is because I'm tired of replacing timing belts. When my car is 7yrs old or has 105k miles on it, the last thing I want to do is dump $700+ in for a timing belt. I had my 96's 90k service done awhile back, it was $1100 at the Honda dealership. That included various things but $500 of that was labor for the belt. On the newer V6's it's even more money.

haha, these prices all make me chuckle...

Mercedes has jaded me for life.

DIY ftw !!! ...I love the fulfillment of doing stuff on your own, but its much easier with a more *mechanical* minded car (instead of one the relies so heavily on computers as almost all are nowadays) as long as you can read, follow directions, allocate proper tools and have a little patience/persistence.

Thank you honda for creating such a fine vehicle for me to use on my bank heist.
