Yes you guessed right, it is most certainly the strut, the purpose of the strut or shock absorber is to damp out the spring motion, if you look at the top of the strut cylinder area, you may see oily dampness, but even if you don't, it's still possible for the valving mechanism internally to fail, which then degrades the damping aspect.
