Young adult here. Got the car off my parents, and knew it would take some maintenance to get it running (it's been sedentary for a year). Already put new tires on it for ~$350. It also needs a fix for an unknown power steering leak, and I've bought a replacement for the oil pan since the mechanic they took it to threaded it with a larger size bolt because of how loose it was getting. However, earlier when I went to jack it up with the scissor jack on one of the manual-specified jacking points, I only got it up a little bit before it literally fell through with rust and speared itself on the jack 😅

My one friend says it's honestly probably not worth saving, but I'm a mildly obsessive weirdo who doesn't let go that easily (and who also, admittedly, doesn't want to pass on a free car). So I figured I'd get people online to tell me it's a bad idea as well!

Is this worth trying to battle through, or should I tell my parents to scrap it and start roaming FB marketplace? I've heard somewhere online that if I could potentially get an auto body school to use it as a project car, they might fix it for the price of parts, but I have no clue if I can get that done in my area. Really don't know what to do as someone just starting off "on my own" (still have family and am living at home, but yknow what I'm saying. I'm an "adult": I still don't know what to do about my problems lol)

First of all, welcome to DA.

Second, as much as I hate to see an Accord go to the junkyard, that vehicle‘s time has passed. I concur with @mtts60 - if the jacking points are that badly rusted out, the rest of the car isn’t going to be salvageable (it’ll basically disappear into dust in an accident). You can take it to a body shop or a trusted mechanic for a second opinion, but my strong advice would be to move on.

Thank you!

Yeahhhhh my thoughts exactly (part of why I was hoping against hope that it was fixable - I love making things work again, and hate to see good stuff go to waste). Any advice on what to do to get the most outta it as far as scrapping goes, and on what to do with the new tires and oil pan I'm sitting on now? I'd like to recoup what I can/get as much as possible to work with now that I'm looking at buying.

It's going to be time consuming, but the best option for maximizing money would be to part it out and list the salvageable stuff online (like eBay), and then drag the hulk to the junkyard. The parts pipeline is starting to dry up a bit for 7th gen Accords, and some of the parts you will find takers for.

Anything and everything is fixable, for a price.

Unless it's one spot and the rest is in great condition it may not be worth it to you. That's a personal decision, but without actually seeing all of the damage and the overall condition of the vehicle it's hard to give an informed opinion. Post a bunch of pictures :)

Oil pan may not need to be replaced. If it's not leaking, leave it alone. Does an oil extraction pump work for the v6 on these? If so you may never have to touch the drain plug again. PS leak could be a $0.50 o-ring, or a few $ hose, find out where it's leaking from.

I mean true that on the "anything is fixable". I just don't know if my limited budget would cover it 🙃
I'll try to get pics but I'll be looking at FB marketplace anyway. The car isn't in the best condition all things considered. I'm a manual gremlin (and anyone who isn't doesn't know what they're missing) anyway, so hey maybe this is a chance to get one of my own! (Accord is A/T)

Yeah, if you have the time (and the space to store parts), parting it out and then junking the shell would be the way to maximize it.

Alternatively, if you think there's any chance you would end up in another 7th gen Accord to replace it, you might consider keeping some of the parts you remove. That's something that in hindsight I greatly regret not doing with my old 8th gen.

I hear that, most of us where there at one time or another.

Even if it's not worth paying to repair, if it's still safely drive-able it might be worth driving it for a few months/years depending on the condition and extent of the damage until you come across exactly what you are looking for at the right price.

Honestly don't know what I'll end up with: I like the space of the Accord as opposed to a Civic but who knows at this point I'll just take what's available (beggars can't be choosers, not to mention I'm not really specifically carrying a ton of people around at this point in life). I did consider that though.
