Hello guys. I have 2009 Accord V6.

From yesterday, I've heard strange noise from a engine room.

It only happens for the first start after sitting all night and only with cold weather (below 40F).

After spending 3 hours on google, I found the same problem from youtube.

They are suspecting the starter motor.

My car is out of factory warranty but has 7 years/100,000 miles Honda care. (Vehicle Service Contract; VSC)

I ask Honda dealer about this issue.

They answered me... "The defective starter can be covered by VSC... but the noise from the starter is not covered because it is not defective."

????? noise from NON-defective parts ?????

Anyway, my question is... is this a serious problem? should I fix/replace the starter?

Thank you in advance.

My 2008 Accord V6 does makes the same sound too. Glad I'm not the only one. I've been wondering what causes that weird sound. Should I go to the dealer? I bought my Accord last December as a certified used Honda at an official dealer. I have a thread relating to this as well.

Mine does the same with ambient temps less than 16C and with the engine cold (cold as in parked overnight). Always has since the car was brand new. Dealer and Honda don't know what it is. I think it's the power steering pump. If I start the car with the belt removed there is no startup noise ever. I also had this exact same noise with my 95 SHO. Replacing the power steering pump on that car resolved the issue.

Let's try to find where the noise is coming from. If it is right side of the engine (direction to the battery side), it might be the starter problem... if it is left side (direction to the power steering oil tank), I guess the tensioner or the power steering motor might the one..... Also I will fax about this issue to Honda USA.... I hope they will get back to me with any answer.... Should we blame our location? MA, ottawa, MI (me) :(

My 2010 V6 did the exact same thing. Add it to the list of reasons I was glad to dump it!!!

My 08 V6 Sedan did the exact same thing last year. I bought it in November and it was cold for the next few months and did it everyday. Once spring, summer came I haven't heard it since. Though I'm expecting to hear once it starts getting cold again.

Honda USA called me 2 hours ago. The Honda customer support will contact the dealerships, what I visited, and collect more detail symptoms from the dealer. Meantime, they are suspecting the O-ring in the PS pump. I have been thinking in same way, so I replaced the O-ring last night by myself. This morning I did not hear the noise, but I need to see more days.

Day 2.. still no noise.. BUT..for last two days, the temperature was unusual.. (over 50F).. so I cannot say it is solved. Let me keep watching on it. The forecast says it will be below 34F this Friday.... I will keep you guys posted.. Thanks.

subscribed. would like to have this fixed on my car as well.

This has been happening to me for the past 3 years during the winter cold starts. I'd be curious to see if there is a solution as well.

On a side note, my 08 V6 with 80k had the radiator fail on me yesterday. Has anyone else has this issue? I'll start a new thread

Bad news... There was the same noise this morning :(, I encourage you to contact Honda USA about this issue... please prepare the following information.. 1) VIN 2) specify the symptom 3) dealer visiting history (when, contact person)..
Fax it to (310) 783-3023 or call 1-800-999-1009. Honda must know this is very common issue of V6 engine on 8th Accord.

After more investigation with my wife -- my wife ignites the engine in driver's seat and I hear the sound as close as I can with hood opened -- I can say that this sound is not coming from the drive belt area, so it may not be the problem of PS pump/alternator/AC pump/timing belt. Furthermore, the sound is most likely from the middle or bottom of the engine room, so the throttle body or intake manifolder may not be an issue. From my best description, the sound is from the connecting point of the engine and transmission. The starer motor is also located there. But I cannot say for sure the noise is from the inside of the engine or the starter itself. Yesterday, the temperature is below 40F for all day, I was able to hear this sound even during the day. (5PM)

This is interesting. I'm going to have to have another listen and see if I can further pinpoint this annoying noise.

I very welcome your comment. Please take another listen and let us know, it would be very helpful for me to narrow down the problem. THX
This morning was ~17C and therefore no noise. Will try again tomorrow and Friday.
