NOTE: Adjust the valves only when the cylinder head temperature is less than 100 ºF (38 ºC).

Remove the cylinder head covers.

Set the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC).

Align the pointer (A) on the front upper cover with the No. 1 piston TDC mark (B) on the front camshaft pulley

Select the correct thickness feeler gauge for the valves you're going to check.



Valve Clearance
Intake:
0.20-0.24 mm (0.008-0.009 in.)

Exhaust:
0.28-0.32 mm (0.011-0.013 in.)

Insert the feeler gauge (A) between the adjusting screw and the end of the valve stem on No. 1 cylinder, and slide it back and forth; you should feel a slight amount of drag.

If you feel too much or too little drag, loosen the locknut (A), and turn the adjusting screw (B) until the drag on the feeler gauge is correct.

Tighten the locknut and recheck the clearance.

Repeat the adjustment, if necessary.

Rotate the crankshaft clockwise. Align the pointer (A) on the front upper cover with the No. 4 piston TDC mark (B) on the front camshaft pulley.

Check and, if necessary, adjust the valve clearance on No. 4 cylinder.

Just looking for verification...

OK, first of all I have this clicking or ticking noise coming from the top of my 04 V6 Accord. A couple of people told me it sounds like a valve. So I start googling and run into this forum. ( So being an owner I had to register :thmsup: ) Sounds like I need a valve adjustment. So I call a Honda service dept. and guess what they say? "You don't adjust those valves they have hydraulic lifters." BUT! (Big BUTT) In my Haynes manual, it actually gives instructions. Also, I found this wonderful post.

So, just curious if someone has already done this procedure before I go out and waste a WHOLE $14 on the 2 gaskets. And about an hour (yes, I'm very slow and careful) taking off the intake and valve covers.

Any help is appreciated!

What I've heard is that the lifter tick is a normal sound to an extent in our accords. But I to am curious, because mine seems kind of loud.

jmg7666, yes, they are adjustable.... the V6s that weren't were the old original ones. The ones in my '03 Accord were adjusted at 15K. Honda's "as needed" policy is bunk! If they come out of adjustment by decreasing the gap, they'd probably never make noise.... yet not perform correctly!! We've done ours at 15k time frames. Never had a noisy one.

ivirovets, yes, SOME sound is normal. It's usually not that much though. Having heard thousands of engines, some sounds are simply normal & the ol' ears ignore them. If I heard it, then it wasn't normal.:D

Princess,
Could you pleae give me the directions on how to remove the Intake Manifold and Valve Covers so I can do a valve adjustment on a 2004 Honda Accord 3.0 V6? Thank you!
