I myself am in college. My Accord is an I-4, and I think it's a great fit. It has sufficient power to merge onto highways and pass if needed. It's pretty good on gas too.

Of course, have your son test drive one first, but I don't think you need to spend $3k more for a V6 model.

Having all of the fluids changed right after buying is a good idea. You can go with OEM fluids if you want, or a brand of your choosing, it doesn't have to be Amsoil.

I recommend sticking to OEM ATF/CVT fluid if your son ends up with an automatic.

Those college pricks will have your son fully convinced that he has single handedly destroyed the planet when they see him driving a V6 model. Definitely go with the I4 model and pick up a 'Hybrid' emblem to slap on the back of it, and tell him if anyone asks say it gets 45mpg running corn starch.
Actually, at my college there are several Accords with V6 badges in the garage I park in, and nobody cares.

There are also several RAV4's with V6 badges, and again, nobody cares about those either.

The current generation is extremely introverted and I'm sure that even if somebody did care, they wouldn't bother to come bring it up with him.
