Hello group,

This question applys to the 4 cyl VTEC in 1999 Accord EX 5MT.

What signs are we looking for to check or adjust the valve lash?
Is it mileage, sounds or just because it's recommended.

Also, I believe there is a special Honda tool to use to properly make adjustment if needed.

Thank you for your direction.

Mileage, mainly, unless you're hearing noise, having an unexplained stalling, rough running or rich codes coming up. Then they need to be checked/adjusted.

No special tools are required. A 10mm offset box end wrench and a good screwdriver to hold the adjusting screw while tightening. The proper feeler gauges, a COLD engine, new valve cover gasket and plug tube seals. A large 1/2" drive ratchet with extensions and a 19mm socket to turn the crank counter clockwise OR a long 19mm box end wrench to turn the engine over via the p/s pump pulley, also counter clockwise.

Probably just need a quick check. They really should be gone over anytime the timing belt is done. The valve cover has to come off anyway.
