So I was at Model's today and when I came out to my car there was a huge dent in it about 3 feet high 3 feet long right after my back tire. It looks like someone was trying to park with a large SUV and hit my car and then just left. I was so shocked and didn't know what to do so I went to an autobody shop to get an estimate for it on my way home and the estimate was something like $1200 without insurance. I'm 18 and have insurance but I'm not sure what I should do. What would an insurance company classify this as? Its obviously not my fault but I don't know who did it. If they covered it would my insurance raise significantly?

I tried to take it out with suction cups..that didn't work.
No I didn't call the cops.. I was freaking out.

What would you do?

Its prob too big but I would look for some pdr specialists and see if they can fix it. Usually they can determine the end result by just looking at it. Sorry to hear this happened to you.

If you do file with your insurance company they would file it under: uninsured/underinsured coverage. This is a supplement coverage you can buy when you bought/renewed your policy.

Cases like these will typical not raise your premiums as you had no control over this. Same as hail damage or a deer hitting your car, although those are covered under your comp. coverage.

As the previous poster stated check with a shop that used PDR (paintless dent repair) and see how much less the quote will be. If it less than your deductible for uninsured coverage than take care of it yourself, if not then look at filing a claim. Also your uninsured coverage should allot you a rental car during the time your vehicle is in the shop getting repaired. Let us know how it turns out. And sorry to hear that there are punks out there that do not take responsibility for their actions.

Actually, if another car hits you, then it's covered under collision coverage. I have both uninsured vehicle coverage and collision, and when some whack-job hit the side of the accord in a parking lot last year, that's what the coverage was categorized as. I tried to get the coverage under comprehensive (which in NH covers glass, hail, trees, theft, animals, etc), especially since I was just parked there - but no go - collision coverage with its deductible. Can't comment on whether it would impact rates or not - we have had Allstate for 30 years and have all kinds of deductible reductions and forgiveness clauses - but you could just ask your agent to see. If you don't report it, then it's just a "what-if" scenario for them.

Good luck - but whatever you do - fix the car because you don't want any future rust issues from broken paint coverage on the body panel because you chose to let it go. PDR might be OK if the paint isn't broken - but given what you said, I'm sure there's likely paint integrity damage (pics could help us help you on this, BTW)

I can only speak for Texas. Here if it is a hit and run, as is the case, then it goes under uninsured coverage. Collision coverage is to cover you when YOU hit someone or something and there is damage to YOUR car that needs to be fixed. Collision coverage pays to fix YOUR vehicle when you are at fault for the damage. Collision claims will raise your premiums.

You need to make sure it is filed with uninsured coverage as it will most like not raise your premiums. Also get a police report filed stating what took place. The insurance company will need that and that is what will help you file it under uninsured coverage. Again I can only speak for Texas but insurance coverage is very similar state to state.

Liability Coverage = Pays for damages caused by you to someone else both property and bodily damages/injuries.

Collision Coverage = Pays for damages to your car as a result of your carelessness.

Comprehensive Coverage = Pays you for damage casued by "acts of god". Stuff you have no control over: Hail, flood, animals.

Under Insured Coverage = Pays when you drive a Lexus and the person that hit you only carries $15K worth of coverage and the damage to your Lexus is $20K. You collect the 15k from the other person and then your insurance company pays the $5K.

Un Insured Coverage = Pays you when you get hit by someone who does not carry any insurance. Hit and run falls under this coverage in Texas and most people carry a $250 deductible.

Hope that help some.

You get on the net and ask what you should do..... lololololol
