I'm about to finalize a deal, just waiting to see if the dealer can do a trade to get inventory for me. We finished negotiating the pre-TTL price and APR and they will let me know if they can get what I want.

If they do get inventory and can continue the process with me, I want to know what kinds of fees or other things might come up at the last minute. A quote I got from another local dealership stated the following:

Sales tax: ~$2k
Tire/Battery/MVWEA: $8.75
Tag/Registration fees: $227.00
Flat Add/County fee: $20.00
Electronic filing: $29.00
Smong abatement fee: $20.00
Documentation fee: $80.00

Total price OTD would be the base vehicle price + $2k + $384.75 other fees. I don't see a destination fee, I guess they included it in the base price?

I'm in California. Are those the only things I should be presented with at any dealer? I want to use those numbers at the dealer I'm negotiating with now, to make sure I don't pay anything I don't have to.

yup, $384 looks perfectly reasonable

You really need to ask someone from your state as most of this is local.

The documentation fee is their profit. I've heard some waive it.

If you are looking at every cent you could ask them to use the mail and charge for a postage stamp instead of electronic filing.

Just closed the deal today and everything went fine. The destination charge was indeed included in the pre-TTL price the dealer quoted me, and they didn't try to play any games during the final paperwork stage of the purchase. I'm happy!

Thanks for the help everyone.

Congrats on your new Honda!

I'm late to the party, but these fees are all legitimate, and required, in California according to their latest DMV notes to dealers. (If they are California BPA partners)

As some have mentioned, you could attempt to get out of the Elec Filing, but for $29.00 I'd rather have my regs done now.

Also, FYI to the group. Doc Fees are better negotiated as part of the sales price. Most states require if you charge one person, you must charge them all. A dealer who waives it simply reduces the sale price but still shows DOC on the paperwork. (some will negotiate it, but look for the discount to show on the price of the car) In California, if the dealer is not a BPA this $80 goes down to $55 max.
