Both of my front tires on the inside are badly worn and have wires showing around the whole inner side. I noticed this problem start to show approximately 6 months ago and had the front tires replaced with decent used tires and I had a front end alignment at a reputable mechanics shop. Today I was doing my 6k mile tire rotation and noticed the front tires were horribly worn and wires were exposed on both of them all the way around on the inner side. I also checked the front tires for any play while one was jacked up and didn't notice any. Any ideas on what to check? I don't want to get a set of new tires and the insides are worn in a year.

I don't know what's wrong with your car, but if you had a "reputable mechanic" do the alignment and he didn't see any glaring problems then I'd question the decent tires. What some people think are decent, I would never put on my car.
If you tires are truly showing the belts, you run the risk of seriously hurting or killing yourself driving on them.

How did the mechanic align it? Does he have the laser alignment set-up?

I work nightshift and had to get my wife to take it there so I didn't get a print out and I'm not sure what type of tools they use for the alignment. I've used them several times in the past and the head guy is very honest and will tell me what's wrong and the price before beginning work. I guess next time I'll ask for a printout with it too. Just didn't think about that.

Given the year of your car, I'd have to wonder if your front shocks are going/gone and causes uneven tire wear even if the alignment is good.

I'll call them tomorrow and see if they have notes in their computer for my alignment. I've had the vehicle since 80k miles and the shocks/struts hadn't been replaced prior to then and still have yet to be replaced and I'm at 190k miles now. I can tell when I go over speed bumps it doesn't sound so pleasant. Are there ways I can check the upper and lower control arms to make sure they are still ok. Also, I noticed today (possibly the tie rods?) the rods coming from the steering have grease leaking out of the boots. Not sure if this problem is related or is just something else that needs fixing.

At 190K it positively needs front end work since nothing has been done to it. Either plan to cough up a wad of money for repairs or keep buying used tires every six months. It could also be unsafe.....have it gone over with a fine toothed comb. Normally if there are problems most places refuse to align it. It's been more than ten years since I've had an alignment and NOT gotten a printout, something fishy there.

Agreed with front end suspension replacement, starting with struts and/or springs for sure! Plus, a thorough inspection of every other joint up there.

I would inspect/test the struts before just blindly replacing them. :yes: Although I would guess they need to be replaced. :thmsup:

What all would you guys recommend replacing? I think if I replaced the struts and shocks I would just buy a strut/shock assembly already assembled and ready to install. Should I just check the ball joints before just replacing them? What about wheel bearings and such?

There's no need to replace the springs unless they are cracked. Swapping the struts/springs is pretty simple with a spring compressor.
Wheel bearings will make noise at speed above 25mph, so if you don't hear a whiring/humming sound, they should be good.
Yes, check the ball joints before replacing. Some can be a bit time consuming to replace, namely the lower ball jont.

What exactly do I need to look at on the ball joints, just make sure there isn't play? I want to say mine didn't have any cracks or grease coming out of the boots, only the tie rods had grease coming out of the boots.

He's already had an alignment. Rotating the tires isn't going to fix the problem. He hasn't expressed any shaking or pulling so balancing isn't needed either.

A balljoint can look perfect from just looking at it and still be on its way to breaking. I just replaced mine and they were definitely on their way out, but looked good from a visual inspection.

Discounttiredirect is having a black friday sale I believe. Keep a lookout for a great deal on tires. Usually, the have a rebate. $100 on 4 or $50 on 2 tires. During their labor day sale I purchased 4 Hankook Ventus V2 Concepts for $240 - $100 rebate = $140 + install $60 = $200 net. 205/55/16's 500 UTQG, traction A, temp A. Had to speak to the manager to price match the closest store which was 1.5 hrs away.
