Ok, I said it; most people who have NEVER driven a 7th Generation Accord just look at them and want to shake the ugly stick at them! I understand this feeling as my wife and I looked at Accords in the spring of 2003. My wife just could not get over the way they looked and would not even test drive one. I must admit I also though they were strange looking in the front, slab-sided with a huge ‘rump’! Yes, it has taken time for me to warm up to the seventh generation Accord.

To make it worse, the power junkie in me just couldn’t see how anyone could be purchasing a car that big with a 4 -cylinder motor! You’re kidding right? Ugly and slow, what a combination! :dunno:

So what moved me into a 2.4L manual Accord? I would say that my wife’s 2003 Acura TL-S really made an impression on me. That car was an eye opener  for someone that was raised on American iron. Like an automotive revelation in refinement, power FE and cost of ownership. Knowing that the TL was based upon the Accord, I started researching the internet boards to see what made them so good. Again, refinement, safety features, power, I won’t go on because most everyone here already knows. My first drive in a 7th Generation Accord came last summer. WoW, for my 80+ mile commute, I found the perfect car. And to my surprise, the 2.4L (K24) with a 5-speed manual is about the perfect car for my needs including an overall FE of 32.41Mpg and rising!

I used to look at the people driving seventh generation Accords and wonder how you could purchase a car so ugly. Now I look at them knowing:

1) You don’t know squat about cars and your purchase was dictated by Consumer Reports! :blah:
2) You read a lot about cars and your purchase was dictated by Car & Driver! :deal:
3) You comparison shopped and you found that the Accord meets or exceeds your expectations!
4) You grin every time you fill up your gas tank!

So back to my original question, would Accords be flying out of Honda showrooms if they weren’t so ugly? I think most Americans purchase their vehicles based upon how they (Vehicles) look or how they perceive themselves to look behind the wheel. Hummer H2’s are the perfect example, nothing more than a cramped shoebox on a Chevy Suburban frame that swigs fuel like a drunken sailor! And they sell at a premium! :screwy:

If most people walked into a Honda dealer and actually drove an Accord (Remember, I wouldn’t do that for a long time!) and compared it to the competition Honda would be cranking them out!

What do you think?

(This post is not meant to upset people that think the seventh generation Accord is a good looking car. No one really thinks that do they? :lmao: )

oh yeah definately. i think honda went a step backward with the whole curvaceous whale look. i much rather prefer the newer edgier look acura has. i feel that if the accord was given some sharper edges (which the lip kit addresses to a certain percentage) the car would be flying to the moon and back and then maybe to mars.

the car needs to get rid of its fat whale rear end, and bulbous look. give it a sharper edge, and overhangs and now we are talking some serious air.

not sure if i would ever buy a 7th gen either..... it does look too ugly, but i have warmed to the new design somewhat.....somewhat being the key word here.... :lmao: hopefully the next gen will fix that..... i think honda took a chance with styling like ford did with the taurus in the mid 90's, and they didn't sell much either.

and the interior looks so...weird and foreign to me as well.....it does look nice and very high end, but i'm not one of those flashy-type people anyways. that's why i haven't taken over my mom's TL payments. but, it does have the autostick and V6 :naughty: :lmao:

i agree that the 7th gen sedan doesn't look that great. it takes awhile to grow on you (it has finally grown on me.) i love how the coupe looks though, but yet, most accord buyers are looking for the family SEDAN, not the coupe!

people DEFINITELY have to drive it to understand everything. worke for my aunt and uncle who have always owned domestic cars and have never even considered a foreign one. yes, they did end up choosing the ford mustang gt, but they were speechless/dumbfounded when they test drove the accord. they had never realized there was so much out there that they were never even considering. (i wonder if seeing my car and all had anything to do with them actually looking into them?? :dunno: )

stiller-really?? you dont like the interior of the 7th gen?? i love the interior of my accord! i think it looks simple and sleek and everything is in the right place and i really love the brushed metal!

anyone who doesnt like the interior of the accord needs to get their brain overhauled. :blah:

anysia: i feel that honda really made drastic changes to the interior in the 7th gen.....i would be very comfortable driving any other gen, but not the 7th... :(

Moving from a GM, Ford or Chrysler sedan to an Accord is an eye opener

Next time remind them that the Accord was built in Ohio and Chrysler is owned by a German multinational corporation. :bawling:

As a side note, most Dodge 4-door trucks and ALL Chrysler HEMI motors are assembled in Mexico which doesn't help the American job market one bit, thanks NAFTA! :furious:

If you happen to purchase an Accord built in Japan, the entire drive-train is exported from the US Honda assemble plants to Japan! Isn’t that a nice change!

My interior is ivory / fake wood and I love the placement and 'feel' of everything. Here is my list if improvements on the interior:

1) Search/seek radio/XM controls on the steering wheel
2) Auto day/night mirrors inside/outside
3) Memory driving seat/mirrors/radio/XM
4) Overhead computer w/ real-time + average Mpg, miles till empty, trip time, real-time air tire pressure sensors

All pretty minor stuff.

I test drove a Mustang GT 5-speed manual in 2003. I was shocked at the lack of refinement! It was very similar to driving my 1971 Plymouth Duster 340, just not nearly as fast and the shifter, oh my, no improvemnt from the early 1970's, but I could power-shift it! I could not drive that car everyday, it would wear me out!

Timeless design - no questions.

Now I for one was not impressed with the looks of the car off the hop when it first came out. But there is one thing I know about Honda's designs. There years ahead of their time. Seriously, compare a 90 accord to a 90 anything else, and you'll find the accord looks no where near as dated as the others. And today the same goes with the 7th gen. I love the design of this car. It's always the designs that grow on you that have longevity. I originally rented a few cars before picking this one. The Mazda 6 was my first choice, just because of it's looks. I thought very slick, but then after a month, I wasn't so fond of it. To me it just looked like the car was "trying" to look good. Sorta "boyracerish" if you will. I'm only 34 myself, but found it a little to much of a calculated design. Not everyone has the same taste, but I for one can say this accord like the ones before it, will last the test of time. And once I put on the front chin spoiler or front skirt(as some call it), and then paint the side sills and mudguards, not to mention new coilovers and rims, this thing is going to look sweeeeeet. Oh and also have improved handling.
BTW, when it comes to interiors, this thing is head and shoulders above anything in it's class or otherwise. I was first drawn to how slick the interior and dash looked, without being over the top. In fact, for me the interior is most important. It's where you spend all your time. If your car's interior is an eyesore for you, then your in trouble.

they didn't even get a stick.... :blah: i'm not a fan of the styling of the new 'stang, but for them it's all about nostalgia/emotion. i have to admit that seeing a 60+ year old man going gaga over the sound of his car is hilarious though!!!

yeah trying to argue with my relatives over where cars are really built and where the parts really come from is exhausting.... i gave up AGES ago!!! :lmao:

all very very good points.

i wouldn't mind driving a 90's civic or accord around assuming it wasn't beat up! ;) although i'd still want my 7th gen too! ;)

Would 7th Generation Accords be flying out the door if they weren’t so ugly?
Ummm....you can't throw a cat around here without hittin' one. I think the looks (although I am just getting used to them, now) aren't holding down sales one bit.

So, to answer your question: You mean even faster?

My previous car was a '99.5 Jetta VR6 5spd. It was a great car, had GOBS of torque, and handled really nicely. Looked sharp, and the interior was nice too. Of course, maintenance... BLAH!

Now I have an '05 EX-L sedan with the 4cyl auto. I was a bit hesitant to step down to the 4cyl from my previous VR6. (Although the stop 'n go traffic I encounter really sold me on the automatic...) I have to admit, I miss the buttery smooth power of the VR6, but I get adequete power with my 4cyl. I drive a transit bus for a living, so by comparison, the power from the 4cyl is great to me. Gas mileage isn't what I was expecting. I was getting 25-26mpg with my VR6, and I'm only getting 27-28 with my 4cyl. (half city, half highway, very modest driving)

As for the styling... I think it looks decent enough. But the interior is really nice, and quite frankly, that's where I spend my time looking. I actually liked the previous Accord's exterior styling better... or the current Acuras... but that was too expensive for me.

Besides, you can't beat Honda reliability... I think that was the #1 selling point for me.

this is where the manual comes in handy! 04 4cyl coupe 5 spd manual getting about 31 mpg or so and not driving with regards to fuel economy!! ;) by contrast my last 2 civics *only* got between 30 and 34 mpg, but both were autos....

Yeah, when I had my 5spd, I'd always shift at low shift points. I don't think I ever exceeded 2500rpms on my casual commute home. Now I see my auto shifting at 3500rpms on the same casual drive. On the bright side, my Jetta hovered around 3,000 at 65mph, whereas the Accord is around 2,000 +/-.

hehe, i shift around 3k, sometimes i even hold it up at 4k in 3rd for a bit for no good reason. i'm bad.... :lmao: or i'll rev it going up this one hill in 2nd. it's just too much fun at times! i have no idea how i'm pulling off the mileage i'm pulling off!

i guess i'm still being less harsh on the manual accord than i was on my auto civics!!! ;)
