Hello,

I bought my 2007 in 2015 with 100K miles. Now in 2021 she has 150K miles and I'd like to change the transmission fluid. I bought the car at Carmax but not sure what they did to the car before selling it.

The color is a medium reddish brown(not black) and there's no burnt smell, so wondering if it was changed sometime before I bought it? Transmission works well, no issues so far. Just afraid about what I've read regarding changing the fluid with high miles and having tranny issues afterwards. Appreciate any thoughts you have. Thanks

Most likely has been changed previously or the car was driven very easy. I would not be concerned servicing as long as you do not flush and use the proper fluid recommend. Do 2-3 drain/fill from transmission pan and keep on keeping on.

^^ This. I change trans fluid about every 30k miles. Since yours hasn't been changed in a while, it'll take 3 drain & fills to get the really dirty stuff out. Use Honda DW1 fluid. Drain the old fluid, replace, and drive it for 25 miles or so. Repeat. On the third fill, you've gotten rid of a lot of the nasty old fluid.

5 yrs. later & 50K miles, the "brownish" color indicates the fluid is beginning to oxidize. I would go slowly on the fluid changes as you don't want to introduce to much newer fluid (you don't want the "detergents" to dislodge to much crud @ one time as it may clog the passageways). I would drive a few hundred miles between ea. change. 44/66/83/92% is what ea. d/f will give you new fluid wise (dilution). You may want to change the inline trans. filter on the last d/f.

Good info KW..... when I do the change, guessing I should only refill with exactly the same amount that drained out? Thanks again!

I'd do 3 x drain and fills, but not with Honda DW-1. Full synthetic Valvoline MaxLife ATF is a better choice for the old 5-speed Honda. It's around $18 a gallon at Wal-Mart.

No. If you do it that way, if you get 1 quart out you'd put one in? When the system holds 3.x quarts?

That's not a good way to do fluid changes. Go by the dipstick.
