My accord sedan just started this behavior at 283,000mi. With this many miles my first thought was to replace the fuel tank unit which includes the fuel pressure regulator and pump. I did look at the fuel lines for damage but did not find any. Has anyone run into this situation? Thanks for any help on this!

There are 2 fuel pumps on a 9th gen Accord. The low pressure pump which is electric in the fuel tank. The high pressure pump driven by the CAM. You could have a couple of issues going on.

1. You have a bad high pressure fuel pump
2. You have a bad pressure sensor on the fuel rail
3. You have corrosion on the connectors to the pressure sensor.
4. You have a loose timing chain.

The question is, have you heard the timing chain rattling? Also you need to pull the valve cover to see if the timing is lined up correctly. If it is off that is your problem.

I saw this issue on this site, not sure why cam timing would not set another error as well.

A bad camshaft position would throw a P0021, P0011, or P0014 CEL DTC code based on which bank 1 or 2. This may sound like a silly question, but have you changed oil viscosity, let it go too long between oil changes (sludge build up), or used any type of magic in a can cleaning products. A car with that many miles can have a clogged Oil Control Valve (OCV) which can cause ECU/ECM control issues that could throw a fuel pressure code. How does it drive? Stalling or loss of power?

On a Honda the normal error with a stretched chain is P0341. I am confused by the post from the other site, are we sure we are talking about code P0088 and not P0008. If it is P0088, get a code scanner that can read real time data and see what the fuel pressure is while the engine is running, also get the freeze frame data from the failure. It does not hurt to check the timing marks.

Well I wanted to give an update on my accord. Thanks to greg1c I turned my attention to the rattle at startup and timing. I found the timing to be off at least a tooth. I first tried to simply replace the tensior but I could not ever get it retracted enough to remove through the inspection opening and would have to remove the entire chain cover. During the repair I also found the front tip of the top chain guide was broken and the front chain guide was also damaged. I ordered a new chain, tensioner, new tensioner filter/screen, guides and a new aluminium chain housing as well since it comes with a couple of seals and filters installed already into it. I replaced the orings on the vtc solenoid and oil pressure sensor, water pump, thermostat, hoses and drive belt as well. When making this repair I found it necessary to remove the water pump and alternator to have good clearance for the installation of the chain cover. The chain cover will be prepped with time sensitive honda bond and the clearance is tight and I had a helper on the lower end guiding the cover. If your going to remove the water pump be sure to drain the coolant and remove the water pump before you remove the chain cover to prevent coolant from spilling into the engine block. Before I started this repair I had the high fuel pressure code P0088, P0420 and the electronic steering warning light all on. Since this repair and since I completed the drive cycle which took a few days I have no warning lights and the car operates perfectly. Hope this info helps another accord owner out there.

Check the timing chain and make sure it is lined up correctly. It is possible you have a bad pressure regulator and or pressure sensor.

Hey I think I’m have the same problem you did when you were driving it was it hard to accelerate? Did your rpm go over ? Did it feel like it was stalling out?

Has the timing chain ever been replaced within the 283k? If not, it is undoubtably stretched.
Hey, are you saying the timing chain should be replaced after a certain mileage? I might have a concern about that.

After two years I wonder how this played out for you. Consider the design issues of the engine, unfortunately the timing chain stretch are the cards we were delt.
